I have a L35 that will not move forward or reverse for about 1-2 minutes after a cold start up. After the first engagement every thing works fine. TIA

Most likely you have a bad hydraulic clutch seal.

A few things you can do before diving into testing and possibly tear down.

How long has it been since fluid and filter change?
What fluid are you using in it?

Sorry for being rude and not introducing my self. I was a automotive tech for a number of years before spending 26 years as a Snap-on dealer. I have for better or worse done all of my own maintenance and repairs on all the trucks, trailers boats and everything eles that have come and gone. I bought this tractor 5 years ago to move sand on a sound front property on Hatteras Island NC. Shortly after I purchased it I changed all the fluids and filters. Aside from some boom cylinder and front hub seals that required replacement it has been trouble free. The problem with the transmission not functioning unil a little warm has been there since I have had it.

I'm not sure on about the napa fluid.
I've had some bad results from "universal fluid"
With GST fluid is 100% the most important part of the puzzle.

If you can get to a jug of it look and see if it's GST compatible.

The next thing I would do is get the WSM it has all the testing steps for the GST.

Sorry no cheap or fee downloads available for that manual.

You will need to get a Pressure guage 0-500PSI or 0-1000PSI and 0-3000PSI, and a 1 foot flexable grease gun hose.

Some other tests:

When you first start it and it won't move does it have Power steering?
Or is the steering very hard or nonexistent?

When it does move does pushing in on the clutch slightly cause it to quit moving very quickly?

Well, I had never tried the steering when the tractor would not move but today I tried the power steering just after start up with the tractor not moving as usual. To my surprise the steering did not operate at first and then after a few seconds it and the transmission began to operate as normal. To me it almost acted as if the pump has lost its prime and operating the steering for some reason caused the pump to start operating normally. Could air in the system cause this?

BINGO!
Yep you're loosing prime and it's sucking air, or the main pump is failing, that is why I asked that question! ;)

Check all of these connections, look for seeping fluid.

I just replaced those highlighted 3 inch rubber hoses they are under vacuum and will let air in but not noticibly leak fluid out. I notice quiter shifting now.
