bushhogging yesterday tractor shut off and will not start.
checked seat saftey switch, high low range switch, and the pto saftey switch everthing seems to be good, battery has 13 volts in it, but tractor wil not turn over. all i get is a click when you try to start it. Any help would be appericated. thanks
Delalisa,
I'm going to assume the click is the primary side of the solonoid kicking in. If it is then you should have power to the starter.
Since your tractor cut off on you the problem is probably something other than a solonoid or starter.
If your tractor just cut off then I'm going to guess it's because it lost fuel, maybe due to injectors not firing. Hence no power to starter or fuel system. This is all a guess based on it cutting off and not cranking.
I would look for that battery voltage at the solonoid when you hear the click. Put the DMM between the power wire going from the solonoid to the starter, and a chassis ground (chassis, engine block). You should have good voltage here when you hear the click.
If you don't then look for voltage at the primary wire to the solonoid (small wire from switch) when you try to crank it. If you don't then the click is a different relay. I don't know why you would not get juice to the solonoid on crank other than the key switch, I don't have a wiring diagram.
If you have voltage at the primary but not the big wire then your problem is most probably the usual problem. I'd say the problem that comes up over 90%of time, that is connections.
Good connections at + and - on battery, good connection of big + wires on both sides of solonoid, good connection on all ground wires, chassis and block should have good return paths to battery. You can ohm these out with DMM.
If that battery voltage drops down conciderably at the starter when you measure between + on starter and ground then it is most likely a connection problem on the + or -. I doubt you have both a starter problem and another electrical problem at the same time, that only happens to me.
Check all fuses, check all connections, then check all connections again, then maybe a regulator or something, I don't know how that thing is wired... yet.
Let us know what the problem turns out to be and good luck.
Tom
