Goochy,
I've been following your posts as you have tried to work it out with this guy on the purchase of the l3400. It seems that you & I have been searching for the same tractor over pretty much the same time period. My search is done, and my L3400 is in it's new home. I put a fairly lengthy post on the "Off Topics" section of the forum descibing my purchase experience.
Don't despair! There is a reason for everything, even the fact that your guy reneged on the sale. I really think that if you keep up the search, you'll find an even better deal, without all of the hassle that you had to go through this time. And don't be too pissed off at your neighbor. Ya'll have two things in common: first, ya'll both appreciate the value of a Kubota tractor, and second, if his move falls through for some reason, you'll still be neighbors!
One good thing is that you had two hours to work with the L3400 tractor. That's a huge plus. I pretty much relied on reviews that I read on line, and I am in absolutely no way even well-informed about tractors, much less an expert.
You may need to think about expanding your search geograhipcally. If you are willing to travel a bit, and have a way to transport the tractor, you'll find that the deals get better and better the more you invest in your search time. If you'd like, I'll even lend a hand, and poke around the various net sale sites around Mississippi and see if I can find anything that you may be interested in. I can tell you that here in Florida, there seem to be quite a few late-model Kubotas in the class you are looking for that are reasonably priced.
Fact of the matter is, even though most of us are lucky enough to be doing well, for others out there, times really are tough. I have noticed that the price of almost everything used, especially big-ticket items like newer tractors, is on the downswing as people find themselves in need of cash. I'm not talking about taking advantage of folks while they are down, I'm talking about being the guy in the right place with cash in hand when somebody decides that the cash is more necessary than the tractor that they bought a few years ago.
There are deals out there, even better deals that the one that you almost had. With a bit of perseverence, you'll end up with exactly what you want, at a price you'll be happy to pay.
Again, let me know if you need any assistance with your search.
God Bless and Good Luck!
Tom
