Hi Will,
Generally speaking, as you found out, an incandescent light bulb will not care about polarity. If that was feeding a relay then you would have to confirm the polarity.

In referance to your original question: "Which wire is hot and ground".
I would take everybodies answer with a grain of salt. If you are not the original owner then who knows if wire feeds have been cut and spliced to original specs. Who really knows if the factory worker did it correctly?

But if you have access to a meter you could find the answer with in seconds. Select ohms and probe one wire to any bare metal on the tractor. If it has no resistance and shows continuity then you just found the ground wire. Check the other one just in case and it should be open, no reading. Old dirty switches can give a high resistance as the meter is ringing through the crud in the switch. This would valdiate a switch change.

Now for fun, switch the meter to VDC. Turn the tractor on, flip the light switch to ON and prboe each wire with the meter to bare metal on the tractor one at a time. One of them should be indicating 12 plus VDC and they other will read 0 VDC.

This is the only way to truly find the answer to your question. Even if you had a wire diagram you would still want to do these checks. Trust nobody but yourself and that meter when it comes to wire runs.

Sorry for such a long reply and most of all welcome to this great forum!

Scott

Thanks Traildust!
Just thought some one has already done it and been there. Did place 2 fuses 10 amp in line also (closed water tight ones).

Will,
I actually feel bad because your original post was on the 21st, last Sunday.
Somehow it slipped through and I didn't notice it or I surely would have responded much earlier.

Just out of curiosity, did you only hook up one light and do you know the wattage of it?

You have two 10 amp fuses in line with each other in series? That is fine if that's what you did for extra protection but just one 10 amp fuse will be ok and give a max load of 120 watts worth of lights.

Excuse me for asking more questions, it's a habbit.

Dude, questions are fine.
Checked the yellow with meter and was hot only with key on.
Checked the black and nothing, no zip, or power.
After cussing because of cheap made crimps every thing was in and yes after I checked I noticed the fuse box had a 10 amp in there and so every light in back has dubble protection of 10 amp.
The lights are 55watt car type.
Hope this answered.....
Will (<--------more questions ask this guy, cause he still does not know what he is doing LOL
