I don't have regen style machine, but from what I have read, it's my understanding that you are "baby'ing" it too much.

I'm sure I will get corrected if I am wrong, but I think you gotta run it hotter/harder to prevent "gunk" from building up.

My l3901 -2015 is going into regen mode every 8 to 10 h of runtime. Is this normal?
...if yes it is quite annoying!
Here is some anecdotal data.

Mine is a little newer model (2021) and the regen interval on it is pretty regular at 40 hours. As RWS suggests intervals seem to get shorter in the winter when it sees shorter run times at lower engine RPM and temperature. With 300+ hours on the clock I think I have only seen 10 hours once. That was in year one and prompted me to make a point of keeping operational RPM up in the 2000 range.

I have around 520 hours on my L3901DT and it has regen'ed 40 times. The time between regs is from 10.6 to 18.0 hours. I use mine mostly to do firewood in the winter time and to maintain our driveway and private road during the summer.

I keep records of each regen and how long it takes, how much fuel I use to fill it up and when I can the oil and filter.

I have only had it start a regen a couple of times just before I was going to quit for the day, so I just keep working till it was done. I haven't noticed any performance difference while it is doing the regen.

regen frequency is dependent on:

engine oil type
engine oil quality
engine oil level
fuel quality
fuel level
air filter condition
air intake condition/restrictions/etc
then we get into the electronics side of things. Wiring, sensors, ecu, etc

unless you have diagmaster available to you the only things that you can do as a general owner is to make sure the oil is the right type, at the right level, clean, and make sure the fuel is the right stuff and is not contaminated with automatic transmission fluid or any other type of "additives" that people put into fuel systems that may not be compatible with DPF-equipped engines. Oh and check the air filter. It has to be squeaky clean on dpf engines.

IDK what is normal for an L3901. My MX6000 regens at approximately 70 hour intervals. I tend to never run below 1800 RPMs. However I don’t understand what is annoying about a regen. I just keep working until it’s done and maintain RPMs.

L3301, 25 hours like clockwork. I would say thats a bit too frequent. I would start with a sensor test and go from there.

My L3901. Winter below freezing moving snow it did a regen at 11 hours. Rpm was 1700-1900 with some frequent idling. Early fall stump grinding at 2600 rpm did a regen at 36 hours. Just fyi

I have a similar vintage L3301.

May I ask why you are finding a regen so annoying?

Most of the time I do not even realize mine is regenerating. Barely hear any difference, don't feel any vibration of other indicators, don't smell any difference, don't notice fuel gauge dropping any faster than normal etc....

WRT frequency like others have said depending on ambient temp, load on engine, RPM being utilized. I dont track as its a non issue for me but guessing every 15 hrs on average.

I have a hunch that higher percentage bio diesels create more frequent regens. Only a hunch so a few years back I switched to only non bio Premium diesel. Probably doesn't help any but somehow makes me feel better and costs only a few pennies as this tractor is not a big user of fuel for me.

I have a 2017 L3901 with a tad over 700 hours now. It definitely varies based upon how you use it. During the winter when I am hauling firewood, dragging stuff or loader work I am running lower RPM's (~1500) and it will regen more frequently. During the summer when I am tilling and mowing at full PTO (~2500) speed it will go as long as 40 hours between regens.

Very annoying when the regen light comes when job is finished and heading for the barn.

I have gotten into the habit of hitting the inhibit button when about 15 minutes from finishing a task ( all 3 of my DPF equipped tractors).
