L3240 in Elgin, TX

Hello All,

I'm looking to purchase a used L3240 that is located in Elgin, TX. The seller is a retired individual who now sells used tractors as a business.

The tractor has 1600 hours on it, has HST and 4WD, a Kubota Loader and R4 tires. He is asking $14k for the tractor.

The seller sounds like a very honest individual but I'm concerned with sending a bank check this large to a non-Kubota dealer.

Was wondering if any members here live close to Elgin and could check out the tractor for me.

I just bought a tractor 550 miles from me. I sent the dealer $250 to hold tractor until I got there and checked it out myself. Supposedly non-refundable but I am sure if it was junk I was going to contact discover and dispute payments, Didn't have to.. it was fine. Are you going to get it or looking to just buy and ship? Not sure I'd trust anyone to go by and look and say OK to that much money

Hello Jeff - unfortunately, we do not have a large market for used tractors in AZ. Texas seems to have a lot of used tractors and this one in Elgin is very appealing. I just want to make sure the guy is legit and that the tractor is operational. I can handle any repairs once it gets here. It's about 1,000 miles from where I live so picking it up myself is really not an option.

TZ250, if you don't get someone nearby to check the unit our for you I would suggest locating and contacting a nearby tractor repair shop. With a phone call see if you can hire them to go give it a once over and get back to you with an overview. I'd think you could get this done for $75-100.

I personally, would not spend $14K hoping I get a tractor that meets my imagined picture.

I would have to see it personally or have a representative help, and then I would only send a couple hundred dollars of earnest money to hold it until I got a first hand look. And even then if I wasn't liking what I saw I would forfeit the earnest money and go home with more knowledge for next time.

I am in Phoenix and found my 126 hour L3800 in Cottonwood advertised on Craig's List. $19,250 last year with three implements, and a little "hood damage." They don't come along often but there were a few in ABQ at the time I was shopping. Also a scam or two so be careful.

Good advice on getting an independent to examine it for you. That might also help get the price down when the seller knows the examiner is going to point out any and every flaw.

Hello Ray - I've also been checking craigslist daily and the used Kubota L series market is just not very big here. A few scams like you mentioned and the other listings just don't fit my criteria. Been watching New Mexico too but it seems like Texas has the volume.

Based on D2Cat's good advice, I've contacted a tractor repair shop that is close to Elgin, TX and left them a voice message.

Then my L275 has 450,000 + miles on it and still going strong.
Take care of them. Use high quality grease, fluid and filters. Do your services as recommended. Take care of little issues before they become big ones.
An ounce of prevention is worth $$$$ in the end.

Quite a few tractor scams on craigslist and also on ebay. I notified ebay of 2 tractor auctions that were obvious scams and they pulled the listings from their site.

I found a good deal on a L3010 in Texas and had it verified. It only has 312 hours and was barn kept and looks new. Working out the shipping details now, I should have it just in time for our best weather! Now I need to look at attachments...I need a box blade and an arena groomer. Will post a picture once the tractor arrives. Will need to locate an owners manual as well.

I pulled the trigger on a 2002 L3010 that had 383 hours. Barn kept and the condition was fairly good. I need to find out where I can get the Service and Operators manual.

Average MPH on a vehicle is around 30 over the life of a vehicle. Can't recall where I read that (R&T or MT or some rag like that is likely) so 30 * 1600 is 48,000 miles to a car/truck. I agree that 1600 hours sounds like a lot, but if it was well maintained, it's still pretty young for a diesel. If it wasn't well maintained, then yeah, it could be worn out already. Therein lies the rub.

I second the idea of having it delivered to a mechanic for a full inspection. Usually they charge around $200 for a thorough job and sometimes you'll need to pay the seller transport charges to and from the mechanic. That will tell you if it was well maintained or not. Get references on the mechanic though, some unsavory sorts just kick the tires, take your money, and call it good.

Great looking tractor TZ! Congrats!

Not sure where you live in the valley but, if you have looked on C/L, there are farm equipment yards in the west out by Buckeye and in the southeast by Chandler or Queen Creek. Some of its a little "high mileage" missing paint but, there are a few deals to be had. With a nice tractor like yours, seems a shame to hitch a rusty implement!
