was bush-hogging yesterday, with the power set up to the pto speed, and when pushing the forward/back peddle the whine of the engine is really loud. Definitely will need to wear hearing protection next time, but is this normal? I was just surprised how loud it was. I only have 15 hours on the machine so far.

My L3800 HST, whines too. Sometimes it's louder than I'd like other times its not to bad. If its to bad ill stop and press on the forward pedal a little slower or adjust the throttle, just a touch. You might double check the fluid level in the trans, mine was a little low and came from the dealer that way. It was much better after I topped of the fluid.

For gods sake, don't get into the manual vs HST debate....

From what I've "heard" it's one of the drawbacks to the HST, they are noisy.

I agree- leave the arguments out of the post. Both types of drive have their attributes and drawbacks. I would say, as you get to learn your tractor more, that you are operating in high range, and loading the drivetrain. Drop it into medium or low range, and the noise will lessen- you are then being easier on the drivetrain. No different than trying to start out in high range, high gear on a manual- just because the gear is there, doesn't mean it is the right time to use it. Experiment with the different ranges on you 3200HST, and you will learn what works best.

What speed select range are you in? High-Medium-Low? It is always best to be in the right range that you need for the work. You don't want to be in HIGH range for mowing. I run my B3200 in Medium or Low. I base this on that when I am mowing and running forward, I want to be able to have the hydrostat pedal all the way down or near all the way down. When you are loading the tractor transmission with too high a gear range, it is noisier and you will generate a lot more heat into the trans. Are you also running in 4 wheel drive when you might not need to? For what it is worth, My Tachometer speed for 540 rpm on the PTO is 2300 rpm at the engine. I generally run at 2000 rpm and it is quieter and it mows just fine.

What Hodge and motorhead said, keep it in the proper range to cut down on the whine; all whine to some extent.

Sometimes just easing off the pedal a little will help, more pedal raises the gearing.

Yeah, they all whine but when you are in too high of a range for the work you are trying to do, they make more noise. Your machine is also new. Give it and YOU some time to break in.

I had not considered that he might be in to high of range, but that could be it.

I haven't had a need to run mine in high yet.

My B2320 HST was pretty whiney when I first got it. It was brand new & after a few hours of running it it got a bit worse. I checked the fluid & like yours it was delivered a little low. Next time I was in town I paid them a visit. They gave me a jug of UDT, do I topped it off. Less whining but it still did it. After reading my manual over & over; & reading here of course I realized it should have SUDT2 in it. I just did my 50 hr service & refilled with SUDT2 & it's much quieter. So, in short the dealer went cheap on fluid before the sale & I know much better now as to which is right for it. Maybe when you do your service you will have a better running & soundings machine.

Prowl around in some older posts by searching the 'whining HST' topic. In one string it came out that the HST whine varied by model and grade. My memory is that those having 'Grande L' or topline models reported their whine wasn't nearly as bad as in 'standard' models. Don't think there was ever a reason given, just owner reports.

HST's can whine, but they do vary by make and model. Grand L HST's are quieter by quite a bit, but then that tractor model costs more, as well as having many more features. You get what you pay for I guess.

On my L3200HST, the engine makes much more noise than the HST, unless I am working it very hard - IE too high of range for the speed.
