l3130 front pivot seal-I'm stuck!

Took off the front hub assembly to replace leaking pivot seal. Cannot get the seal off shaft. Any suggestions. Have removed all snap rings etc..last two things take off are bearing and seal. Tried hammering out by putting an oversized socket around bearing and whacking it but no go. Got it about 1/4 inc off shaft. Have attached pics.

Edit-the guy at the Kubota shop in town told me that the assembly would "slip off" once I removed the internal/external snap rings and gears..then easy fix to replace replace the seal....not. I'm thinking I need a bearing puller since this has been on for 12+ years...anyone else had a hard removing the seal from the shaft? It definitely didn't slip off!

A couple more pics. I'm thinking I have to rent a puller. Anyone run into this?

Did you beat on the end of the shaft or did someone else, as the end has marks where it's been it a mushroomed out, you going to have to clean up the end of the shaft to get it to go through the bearing.

Yep...that was me. Beat the crud out of it just like the tech at Kubota told me...maybe he said gently tap it with an oversized socket.

So it didn't come out easily initially and I'm guessing I need to file off the lip I created and then it should slip off??

I need to do the left side also. It should slide off with a "little" bit of persuasion right? Any tips so no mushrooming next time.

Any suggestions on an easy way to remove the lip I created?

Use a pipe or rod that goes all the way the center of the case to pop the top off.

As far as cleaning up the case, a die grinder with a very fine flap disk will do it,
But be gentle as you don't want to take too much off of it.

And get yourself a good brass draft punch for when you want to drive a steel part out of another steel part without mushrooming.

One of the more illusive problems that won't be visible until after bearing failure is that when an inner bearing race is impacted laterally, there is an excellent chance that the precision ground face under the ball bearings and respective cage will be damaged by brinelling. It is always recommended to drive against the outer race if brutal impact is required. Please don't feel I am on the attack here.....it's just that some bearings will not otherwise survive the removal.

Thanks for all the input. Hopefully I didn't damage the bearing in the process. Anyway to assess damage visually or is a replacement a good idea since it will be apart.

I did that job on mine last year, the biggest issue I had was getting a good pair of snap ring pliers to get the ring off that holds the bearing in place. There must be something still in the groove that the snap ring was in .. doesn't take much. Try a dental type cleaning pic type of instrument or fine wire and check to see if the depth of the groove is the same all the way around, ie is anything remaining in the snap ring groove?

As wolf man said use a pipe or 1" steel rod that goes all the way down in the housing to nock it apart. Most die grinders will be to big to get in and clean that edge up. Harbor freight sells a small dremel tool set that works great to get in small places like this. I just repaired on last week with the same problem, it was really mushroomed . Be careful not to take to much material off.

I am positive the snap ring is off. I didn't clean out the groove and I need to clean up the edge to get rid of the mushroom effect. I certainly hope the left side goes smoother...I have made all the mistakes on the right!

Success! The shaft was not coming off without a fight. Cleaned up the end and used a pipe and sledge hammer and no go. Finally put it on 12 ton shop press and had to really apply a lot of pressure but it finally popped off.

From what I've learned some shafts will basically fall off once the snap rings etc are removed and some will need big time persuasion.

I'll be prepared for the next one!
