I have a Landpride third function kit installed which uses the open and close button on the loader joystick knob. As long as its working and the electric solenoids do not take a hike I , at least for me, am much more productive being able to lower/raise and curl while closing or opening the grapple.
I pick up a lot of brush, cut limbs, dead pines and the technique that I use a lot is lowering and pushing into a pile close or at ground level, then go full curl down and close the grapple at the same time. This seems to pick up the vast majority without a lot of ground disturbance.
That sounds like my technique with brush. The 'issue' with my setup is this: the valve section I added is the first in the stack. Since it is not a series configuration like the curl valve, it blocks the curl and lift, I cannot curl and close the grapple simultaneously, I have to alternate, inching each one.
My setup is clean, no interconnecting hoses, but, unless I find a cheap series valve section, I think a solenoid would do. Actually, I'll probably just keep what I have and practice more.
EDIT, that's wrong, the new valve is the last in the stack. But the operation is as I described. Hmm, I'll have to do more studying.
