Hi. My first foray into orangetractortalks... I bought a 10 year old L3010. The previous owner broke the rear pto, something about mounting a post hole digger and his son moving the three point hitch and .... anyway, it doesnt turn. Its a 3spd transmission. My BIG question, does it need to be split for repair or can it be disassembled from the rear? One Kubota dealership says "split" and a kubota mechanic today said "from the back". Splitting is a couple thousand $, from the rear is a couple hours labor. Obviously, I am very interested in getting some hands on comments. I appreciate it. Bob

I think you will find that comes out readily from the rear. Just a spline and a bearing with housing that bolts on.

If all that happened is the broken PTO shaft you'll be fortunate. If you're lucky you can get it from the rear and nothing else will have been damaged.

Regardless it's worth trying from rear.

CAUTION: get a parts schematic. Free online. Yours MAY have a free-floating splined collar on the forward end of the PTO shaft that couples the two male shaft-ends (the new PTO and the internal tractor output) together.

That collar MAY come out on the broken shaft stub but (if present or still present at this point) I'll bet it falls into the bottom of the machine. Others have said they leave it and simply reinstall with a new one but I'd be reluctant to leave it banging around where it might at a severe bump get somehow picked up into the gearing.

A double-jointed skinny teen can reach down inside and sometimes retrieve the collar. Plan on a long flex magnet and some 'fishing' time. When reinstalling stick all together with good grease to get ends realigned in a delicate operation. Then see if you can see or feel with a long wire that the collar is actually present as intended otherwise the PTO shaft she won't turn so well.

Consider changing the rear seal gasket as easier now than after refilled.

Good luck. Post back what and how and pics if you can.
