kubota L295DT Hydraulic reservoir
Hello everyone,

I am posting for my wonderful 80 year old neighbor. His 30 year old L295DT finally needed it's first repair ouside of routine maintenance. He blew a hydraulic line while using the back blade to clear his driveway and replaced all of his lines today.

Unfortunately, he cannot find his hydraulic fluid reservoir. He had me look over the tractor and for the life of me I couldn't find one either. I thought perhaps the reservoir might be tied into the transmission, but I don't think so since this is a gear tractor, not HST. Owner's manual made no mention of it either, at least I could not find it in the 5 minutes I looked.

I am hoping someone has this tractor and can give us some insight, or can point me in a direction to find this information.

Thanks for all replies and help, I truly appreciate it.

My pops used to have a 295DT. Can't recall the exact location, but under the seat is a good place to start. The tractor does have a common hydraulic reservoir, even if it is a gear driven tractor, unless there is an auxilliary hydraulic pump mounted to the front part of the tractor on the crank flywheel. If that is the case you can follow the lines back to the "tank". On my old Ford 3500, the hydraulic res was the loader frame itself. It was a "hydrostat" tranny, but didn't share reservoirs.

Guys,

Thank you so much for all your help. One last question.

My neighbor made me question my thought that the transmission is the hydraulic reservoir when he stated it took 80 weight oil, not hydraulic fluid. Does this tractor substitute 80 weight oil for hydraulic fluid?

Thinking back it makes sense as I did pull off the fill plug to the transmission and it looked quite dry.

Thank you all again.

I have a similar but smaller tractor, L245DT. From what I've read, you don't want to use gear oil if you're running hydraulics like a loader or in your case a rear blade. I use Walmart tractor fluid, the universal type meant for transmissions and hydraulics in shared fluid systems like we have. Seems to work good for me. Vic has a video about fluids you might want to watch.

I used the Wallmart universal tractor hydraulic fluid as well when I did the recent rebuild on a 295.

Here's a pic of the port that fluid will come out when the transmission is full.

If you go to http://www.kubota.com/part/PartsLookup.aspx and enter your tractor model # etc, you can get all the current correct part #s for filters, fluids, etc.

For your tractor, anything compatible with Kubota UDT fluid is OK. As others have said, Walmart has a less expensive Universal Tractor Hydraulic fluid that is compatible. Tractor Supply is another option.

The older tractors did use an 80-90 oil for the tranny. You can and should drain the oil and replace with a kubota UDT compatible hydraulic fluid. You will not damage the tractor by going this route. Clean/replace filters/screens at this time.

"Theekillerbee" has a good point....clean the filter while you're doing fluid(s)...

heck, the fuel and oil filters are right there too...just sayin' ;)

Everyone keeps taking about Walmart universal tractor fluid (UTF), I have found Mohawk brand UTF at my local auto parts store, but they have a heavy and light version. Neither has a SAE weight on the bucket. My L245DT will be used in a colder climate (down to -20 C)

What is you suggestion, heavy or light UTF?

Thanks

Generally speaking, lighter is faster, as in less resistance to flow. I would verify they are indeed universal and suited for transmission and wet brakes and not just for hydraulics. See if any specs are listed on the jugs, do they both meet the Kubota UDT specs?
