Howdy, just bought an L2850 this week and was told every once in a while it will not start. Started it no problem and drove it yesterday. Went to start it today and nothing. Doesn’t make any noise really, lights turn on intermittently. So it definitely seems electrical. The previous owner said he’s checked the starter and it was fine, however in a day or so it’d start or if he cleaned the battery cables/connections.
Anyone have any ideas? I noticed two wires near the negative post that are not connected to anything (one red/orange, the other has a terminal end). Appreciate the help!

If it was mine it would get a new negative cable and I’d get rid of the dead ended wires. A new positive cable would be a good idea too.

That points to dirty battery cable connection ,deteroated battery cable or poor wire connection. I would concentrate on being able to consistantly turn lights on and hope that also cures starter problem. FULLY CHARGE BATTERY. Adjust a head or tail lamp where it's easy to see from mid point of tractor. Turn light switch on. If lamp aluminates try the starter. If light dims or gos out that's good because it is easier to troubleshoot than @#*%^# safty switches. Leave light switch on and watch from corner of eye for lights to come on/brighten while testing. Put multimeter probe in center of + battery post and other probe to engine block or other metal part. Less than 12.6 volts indicates bad cable connection or cable wire. Examine and clean BOTH ends of both cables and see if lights come on. Report back.

Check the WSM (aka service manual) maybe for what the wires are for.
Probably something that was added and not factory.

Your issue with it not starting sounds like a safety switch issue.
The WSM will help you with that too.

It may be my screen but those wires look like they got really hot.

Good evening, appreciate all the help! I started with the battery cables and cleaned the terminals. Replaced one battery terminal and cleaned all connections. Started right up. Thanks all! And thank you for the the manual.

Thank you for letting us know what worked,it's good to know if advice helps or simply wastes time for those with a problem. Now that you aren't tied up working on your tractor stay around and tell us about yourself and what you use your tractor for.

I’m glad you got it going but I still think you should replace the complete battery cable (with the lugs attached by the factory). Most likely the cable to terminal connection will be the next point of failure in your electrical system.

Appreciate it! We have a 10 acre farm. So it’s used to move round bales and brush hog mostly. Sadly enough, I bought this thinking it would be big enough for the job and unfortunately it’s not so I’m back in the market for something a tick bigger that can double stack round bales. Thanks for asking!

I was about to offer suggestions for handling rounds with a small tractor until you said you need to double stack them. When you upgrade I recommend against adding a lot of ballast to 3 point to offset weight on FEL. Limit ballast to loaded rear tires. Have them demonstrate tractor WITHOUT ballast. Many people increase pressure relief setting and use ballast but many people also have serious problems down the line. At 3k lbs your L2850 might do it with ballast and jacked up hydraulic pressure but I agree with getting a larger tractor. If a tractor handles rounds on fel without ballast it's ok to use a fork on 3 point to transport 2 bales simultaneously.
