I broke my steering linkage while pushing out a tree in the middle of the woods today. The stump popped up underneath the front axle and hit the shaft in front of the universal joint and sheared the shaft off right where it goes into the power steering assembly (the housing that sits on top of the axle). I think the part I need is called the "shaft joint". There is also a seal that it goes into I believe. I'm trying to attach a picture of an intact shaft with an arrow pointing to the broken part, however on my tractor, the part broke farther forward at the end that lies behind the frame.
Can anyone verify the part I need and has anyone had any experience with this repair? It looks as if I will have to remove the power steering assembly and take it out of the woods to get the broken piece of shaft out. This is going to be a tough job carrying all the tools I may need back into the woods by hand.

So after talking to the parts guy at my local dealer, he thinks that I may be able to remove the broken piece of splined shaft from the power steering assembly with a strong magnet. If that doesn't work, I may be able to remove the rubber dust gasket that surrounds the shaft where it plugs into the power steering assembly, which may give me access to grab the shaft piece with pliers and pull it out. Hopefully one of those ideas will work and I wont have to pull the whole assembly.

If anyone else has any experience with this, advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi if I understand correctly the shaft going into the box broke off flush, that part is the main shaft or worm shaft. You'll have to remove the box to replace it, there will be a bearing or bushing below the seal it may be damaged as well (elongated hole) . You don't specify if it's power or manual, both are similar. I've never worked on one like yours but I'm assuming it's the same as a truck or older automotive type box take your time and lay the parts out the way you remove them. The other shaft(sector shaft) has to be remove first once the box is on the bench. Good luck hope this was helpful.Barry
