I'm looking at an L2800 rig, low hours, in pretty solid shape.

Only issue (and why the owner is selling) is that the rear hub housing is cracked and it subsequently won't hold hydraulic fluid. Looking at the parts schematic, doesn't look like it is super difficult to remove and replace. Has anybody ever gone though that process before? If a hub housing is cracked, what are the odds that something internal is FUBAR as well?

Call Ewald’s and tell them you need your cracked hub repaired and see what they tell you it will take/cost and you’ll have an idea of what this entails.

Depends on where the "crack" is.

And if the crack is near another case it's possible both cases are cracked.

I seen cracks happen for a multitude of issues most predominantly rear issues are attributed to the use of a three point backhoe.

If you had a picture of the crack then we could evaluate it further.

Me personally I wouldn't hesitate to buy a tractor with that kind of damage as I think they are incredibly easy to work on, but thats me! ;)

Rear hub, left side.

I'm not opposed to doing some work, parts aren't terribly expensive and the discount this guy is offering because of this is pretty sweet.

That not a crack!

That's a complete break.... but yea I'd still buy it if the price was right.
I wouldn't consider a weld I would replace.

When I see breaks like that, it's normally from someone dropping the tire into a hole at a pretty good clip, or hitting an immovable object like a tree or a big rock!

Not very likely that was caused by something internal coming apart. ;)

New case ~$600 + other seals and parts maybe ~$750 total, so keep that in mind in your negotiating.

He claims it happened when he tried to push a tree he thought was about to fall over down.

A replacement hub housing is about $600, I'd assume a couple of hundred more for miscellaneous parts that would need to be replaced as well (gasket, seals, etc.). Still would put the price of this tractor below older comparable ones with more hours. Not sure if it will be available when I get to look at it, but want to go in with some idea of what to look at and expect.

Could be if he backed up on the trunk and then slipped off sideways. People do stupid stuff. It's what makes us human.

My question is, did he continue to run it until the case was completely dry?

Claims he drove it back to the barn and shut it down after that because he didn't want to burn up the hydraulic pump.
