I am having some troubles with my gears. I operate a L2800 with front end loader and always on dirt. Machine was bought new and has 800 hours.

I noted some gear bind a few weeks ago where as I let off the clutch it the gear appears to hesitate and click as it engages. Today I was shifting out of 4wd (disengaging the front wheel) and am hearing a whining moving forward and a clicking in reverse. The gear is working as I can still move with the whining. When I lock back into 4wd it runs fine with no noise.

Thanks,
Tom

Clicking under power can be serious but not always. (possible broken gear teeth or ball bearing). The symptoms sound like incomplete shifter travel, maybe a linkage issue or incomplete clutch disengagement.

It's often possible to diagnose linkage travel with one front and one rear wheel lifted up and blocked off the ground. By rolling the rear wheel as you move linkages in and out of engagement you may see that something is sticking or not traveling all the way etc.

Thanks for the input. This weekend I'll jack it up and play with the linkage to get a better idea where the problem might be. The visible linkage looks fine (no bends or debris) so I assume this may be a matter of it not engaging fully in the down position since that releases the front wheel drive and when the noise starts. I'll remove the lever and work with the linkage at the transfer case if I can due to the trouble shifting in and out of 4wd.

I've had the tractor for about 8 years and 99% of the time was in 4wd in the woods but just a few weeks ago started taking it out of 4wd more often when I started a project along hard road frontage. Fingers crossed I don't have interior damage.
