It seems my oil bath air filter has disintegrated due to poor maintenance by the previous owner. Id bet its never had oil in it and rusted out. Has anyone found a way of modifying one from another tractor Or a reasonable conversion to a standard element style filter that doesn't look like cancer on an ape’s ass?

You need to refit with a dry, pleated AF instead. The oil bath AF's are very inefficient at trapping anything but pea gravel. Talk to your local dealer about a dry replacement.

So far my Dealer hasn't been able to come up with something. Don't know if I take measurements and pictures and my manual in to them if that would help for my L260

I enjoy my L260 but it doesn't start real easy in the cold, but with snow and hills up her I don't do much in the winter with it. I did put beet juice in the tires and have chains for it. It runs good and pulls well.

Oil bath filtesr are fine. People went to the dry filters because they are easier to clean. As man got lazy the pleated filter took over. Often the oil bath filter is recommended cleaned daily for tractor use in dusty conditions. Yep, they're still made and used on equipment.

I have had some oil bath filters where the air just flowed past a puddle of oil. Probably not effective.
But I also had a huge one on a Toyota LandCrusher that was deigned to draw air down into & then up through a huge oil reservoir. If you cleaned the housing, filled it with the proper amount of oil, (2 qts?) and then ran at high RPM, there was oil residue about 4-5" higher than the oil static level inside the housing. I imagine it filtered pretty well, judging by the amount of sediment (and pea gravel:)) I had to clean out periodically.
I was told it was an option for the african continent, along with the snorkel that drew air from the glove box.

I am all for swapping to an element filter. Just had no idea on if there is some sort of universal replacement for the assembly, or if people are just hitting the local junk yard and rigging it.

Find one you like which has cheap replacement elements...and hook it up to your intake using radiator type hoses and clampsl

My older L185F has a cylindrical pleated filter that is inside a metal container. It sits above the battery at the top of the radiator and then some rubber hose. You may be able to adapt that to your tractor. I’ll try to remember to take pictures of it this weekend.

007kubotaguy may have a complete filter assembly for your tractor or other older Ls like yours. Send him a private message and see what he can get for you. He deals in old parts.

Oil bath filters were an engineering marvel of simplicity ....... the have been around for a long time.

HOWEVER - there so many potential drawbacks to the system.

I would find a way to engineer ANYTHING that will bring it back to a paper element. The radiator hose to canister would be a perfect solution - just getting it all to fall into place will be the only problem.

Strange. We have a JD 2020 made in 1968 with one. Other than a new fuel tank and PTO rebuild never had a single problem with the tractor. Engine purrs like a kitten.
