Hello,

Can someone please tell me what the torque specification is for the Oil Pan Bolts on the L2550 ? ( 1985 Tractor ) ( # 50890 )

According to my research, it is 100 ft lbs. 100 ft lbs ?!?! That sounds high, and as I was tightening one of the bolts I was getting what seems to be metal shavings from the pan as the lock washer is digging in to it. The bolts have a 7 stamped on them and they are 14mm. I couldn't find the "Oil Pan Torque" but there is a "if not otherwise specified" chart, and that is telling me 100 ft lbs. I need confirmation on this before I can feel comfortable tightening these down that tight.

Many thanks for your assistance !

Well, I am a complete #$*@!?* idiot.

The chart for "if it's not otherwise listed" says the torque specifications are for the NOMINAL bolt size. I was going by the head of the bolt size, which is NOT the NOMINAL bolt size, I've learned. So ya. I'm stupid and I stripped one of the taps. Not for the engine oil pan, but for the new 3 point hitch hydraulic pump that I bought that cost over 400$. It's going to be fantastic when I start this thing and hydraulic fluid comes streaming out of the top of the 3 point hitch hydraulic pump.

<sigh>
:mad:

ok .. so as super luck would have it, the one tap that I stripped in the hydraulic pump, for whatever reason, the bolt that I over torqued and stripped was SHORTER than the other two bolts. So .. all I had to do was swap that bolt for one of the longer bolts and I was able to torque them all down to the CORRECT torque. The oil pan doesn't seem to be any worse for wear either. I loosened all the bolts and then tightened them to the appropriate torque as well. Things seems to be ok. What an unbelievable stroke of bad and good fortune.

Good to hear you got the problem solved and quite simply.

When tightening most bolts you can use your strength, and logic to get real close to torque specs. There is probably not a bolt on your tractor that requires a 100ft/lb torque. Most of the bolts you could probably tighten with a 3/8 ratchet and your wrist (one handed).

In the future if it seem too much, stop and take a break. In the workshop manual there will be a list of bolt diameters and tightening specs.
