I have an L2550 which I recently bought. It has 1150 hrs and from the maintenance records recently had a new clutch installed. I noticed a fairly bad oil leak coming from the trans area under the cover in front of the seat. I removed the cover and it seems that the oil is coming from the area where the trans bolts to the rear axle housing. My question is would this only be from a poorly sealed gasket or do the bolts extend into case and need some sort of sealant on them.

Kubota gear housings generally use studs threaded into blind holes (not thru-holes). Has the machine ever been separated at that joint? There can be leaks if the original gasket adhesive wasn't removed completely. That location is not pressurized so a possible cure would be to drain the oil into clean buckets, clean the area with solvent wire brush/grinder, and reseal with epoxy. Good luck.
