Hi there,

I'm new to the forum, and have searched for an answer. Up to my elbows in grease, I'm writing to ask for help. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Last year I bought a used L245dt, with loader and bucket. The rear oil seal was weeping a little. It's a tough little tractor, and i like it enough to spend the time and $$ to repair it. By the end of summer the weep got worse. With summer coming again, it seemed like a good idea to replace the seals.

I downloaded the parts manual, went to the local dealer, and ordered the parts (seals, all four bearings on both sides). Got the parts in, and tore down the axle housing, removing the shafts. All came apart easily. I cleaned everything up, and saw that the rear seals were worn. Bearings are worn, but not unreasonably.

The weeping, on one side appeared to be caused by an outer metal seal that slips on the axle shaft, and around which the rubber seal sits. That metal seal, on one side is warped, and appears to have buggered that seal.

Here's the problem - the metal seal is not in my box of parts. I looked on the parts manual, and it doesn't look like it appears there, either.

What can i do to get such a seal?

Again, thanks in advance. Hopefully I'm just not reading the parts manual right - so please set me straight!

Jason

If the part that you are describing is a thin metal sleeve pressed onto the sealing surface of the shaft, it is possibly an after market repair part used to fix damage to the origional sealing area. Check with any auto parts store. You will need to know the diameter of the origional seal surface. I think the brand that I have used was called a "Seal Saver" or something like that. It is used with the normal replacement seal, it just expands a little more. Hope this helps. Larry

Thanks - just looked it up - the photos are EXACTLY what it looked like. Now, off to find a Speedi-Sleeve. When I started this project I thought it was a mechanical repair job, not an easter egg hunt. Who knew?

Im looking at the exact same job sometime this summer. Once I fix all the other issues. Although they seem daunting, their just time consumers really. Not something ive got a lot of these days. Good to know about the after market sleeves. Always good advice on here.

Oil for the rear axle comes from the common reservoir. Service manual recommends UDT Fluid. L245DT reservoir capacity is 24 qts.

I guess the outrigger style reduction gear boxes just throw me off.
I "may have heard" that some model years of the L245 had a straight axle...?
There are (or looks to be) fill and drain plugs on each side rear gear box
so you can assure me, these both fill from the main reservoir.

please forgive me for sounding hard headed... just getting my brain wrapped around it.

THANK YOU.

There are drain plugs on each rear box in order to completely drain the hyd. oil as the main drain plug is higher.

Once you get it apart you will see how the oil from the main reservoir flows through the axle housing to each of the rear drive gears.
