L2250 Front Axle Problem, Please Help!

Assuming the deal was as you reported, he clearly misrepresented the tractor. I'd follow his suggestion about contacting a lawyer.

He makes references to Country Chevy in his FB postings. If he's a mechanic or used car salesman there, one could believe that he has at least a passing knowledge of things mechanical.

It is, thank you for sending me that, I needed in case I get an attorney - he blocked me on everything right after he sold it- he also said he doesn't know "Anything about tractors" when I told him to come get it. Looks like he knows how to ride it pretty well. Anything you see on there that could be helpful would be awesome, I cant see it.

His property is worth over 1 million apparently, and he has to con someone on a tractor? Wow

I am emailing his employer as we speak to inform them about the situation and his dishonesty - I hate to do it but I feel backed against a wall.

Be careful of that… If it is intended to cause him harm…regardless of your own poor experience with him… unless it directly applies to his performance as an employee or representative of the employer… you might be accused of defamation yourself. I’d check with a lawyer as he suggested.

(as a humorous aside… it does indeed appear in that pic that he doesn’t know anything about tractors)

There’s no doubt you got screwed and you really need to check the regulations in your area and talk to an attorney.

When I bought mine there were leaks everywhere, everything was "repaired" with bailing wire, duct tape, and bread twist ties. That being said, I knew they were things I could fix. I did make sure it was mechanically sound before any money changed hands. I raised up the front end with the bucket, locked it in 4 Wheel drive, made sure it was solidly locked and one front wheel spun opposite of the other one without any noise. While I was doing this I had the throttle at full to let it heat up. I then proceeded to do some donuts in 4 Wheel drive to make sure there was no clunking or banging in the driveline. I then took it and proceeded to play in a dirt pile he had there with the loader. If someone won’t let you do this with an old used tractor, walk away.

Previous to that purchase, I went to Jersey to look at another super clean tractor. Went through all of the same stuff and I went to take a picture of the serial number…. The guy went absolutely berserk.. Completely freaked out with comments like “what the hell are you doing”. I told him I was going to send the picture to a state trooper friend of mine to run it through NCIC to make sure it wasn’t stolen. I watched the color run from his face when I said that… needless to say the deal was off at that point.

Well, he came and picked the tractor up yesterday and gave me all of my money back. He also gave me a guitar from the 50's for my trouble.

He said that he had never dealt with anyone like me before, I think a few members from the forum messaged him on FB and told him what he did was wrong. He said his employer was not happy with him either after I emailed his boss (and about 15 other people at his company.) I forgot to tell you guys that I also messaged his mother and told her about it as well. She offered me $2,000 to stop what she referred to as "Harassment," I told her I was not intending to harass or upset anyone, simply stating facts. He wanted me to sign something he hand wrote, saying that I would stop the harassment, etc. . . I took my money, refused to sign it and walked away. He loaded the tractor, bush hog, and scraper up and left.

Thanks for the help everyone, we put a ton of pressure on him yesterday. I am going to email his employer and tell them that he made everything right. This is a huge win!

Feel free to send me some functional 4x4 tractors w/ a loader if you happen to come across a good one.

I think your lesson is to do more due diligence before handing over any funds! Warm up the engine, drive it around, use the loader to get the front axle off the ground and see if 4x4 works.

How far you willing to travel for the right loader tractor? Keep an eye on FB Marketplace and you'll find something soon.

I agree! For the right setup and price I'd probably drive up to 300 miles one way

You should consider yourself VERY fortunate!
Next time maybe take an experienced mechanic, and/or experienced tractor owner/user with you when you are serious about a particular used machine.

I usually have zero problems with purchases, I've fixed and lifted a couple of jeeps and a bmw that I turbocharged from naturally aspirated all in the last 1.5 years. I work on my own stuff and can't recall the last time I've taken anything to a Mechanic. I've just never owned a tractor before, so it's new to me but the concepts are the same.

I had suspected there to be something wrong with it for the price, but for the front axle to be blown and hidden from the buyer is wrong and greatly affects asking price. I don't think a mechanic would have dissambled the drive shaft assembly and discovered what I had found with a basic pre-purchase inspection

I don't consider myself lucky... I would have hired an attorney if he had not picked it up and gave me my money back. I would have gotten my dollar back from regardless. The hoops that I had to jump through hoops and the person the seller brought out in me is not someone I want to have to be ever again. I shouldn't have had to coerce him into returning the Tractor. The honor system is null and void in today's climate, sadly. He should be charged for pain and suffering. I feel bad for the next person who is going to buy it and not know how to force him to give them their money back

Keep an eye on FB Marketplace and you'll find something soon.

Keep an eye out for scams also. FB & Craigslist are loaded with them. When you see a tractor worth $40k listed for $12k…. Beware.

Where I am in PA, that wouldn’t have done any good, unless you have a written warranty from a dealer. Our laws are 100% buyer beware in private transactions.
