Hello all, I apologize for a newbie question. I've tried to find the answer without much luck. I'm looking at purchasing an 1990 L2050, the owner has let me have the tractor for a trial run. I can't figure out how to engage either the High/Low Gear range or the 4wd. There is a lever just below the seat on the left/front, I can move it up and down, but as far as I can tell it neither engages 4wd or changes the gearing. There is a sticker on it but it is worn so badly I can't read what it says. I don't even see another lever. The owner barely used it and she doesn't remember how to either.

I've tried looking for the manual online, but looks like it must be purchased. I'll probably buy the manual if I buy the tractor, but don't want to purchase it yet.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you can post a picture of the seating area (and levers) we can tell you what to do.

I am not familiar with that exact model but I will hazard a guess that the lever below the seat needs to be pulled UP to engage 4wd and pushed down (the position it is likely in now) for 2wd. Since it has no doubt not been in 4wd for a long time....it will take a strong pull UP to get it to engage.

Hi and Low range are most likely a lever to the left of the seat near the rear fender well and it also is levered either UP (for low range) and down for High range (or vice versa). But with pics we can tell you.

Is the current owner available to give you a walk around on the controls and functionality of the tractor? I think I would pause for a moment if someone I was buying a tractor from doesn't know how to run it unless its an estate type situation where the actual owner is unavailable for one reason or another.

Good luck, I hope it all works out. :)

Looking at the parts break down, the hi/low range lever should be pointed towards the front of the tractor, and the 2/4 wheel drive lever should have a 90' bend in it and be pointed towards the seat.

Both levers are on the left side, 4wd will be just under the front of the seat and the range will be to the side of the seat.

That is exactly how mine (L2350DT) is arranged. Don't know if it is the same for the OP's tractor but mine operates as below.

To Engage 4WD:

To Select Gear Ranges (High and Low):

OP's tractor should have 'something' similar.

This almost exactly what mine looks like. The sticker by your 4wd lever is same size/shape/location as mine, but I can't read mine. So I'm assuming then that it is the 4wd handle. I have the low/neutral/high sticker on the inside of my fender also, but there is not a handle anywhere around there. Could you take a picture of where that selector goes into the transmission? Do I assume correctly, that I need the clutch engaged for using both the 4wd and the hi/lo levers?

Thank you!

I can only offer what 'mine' looks like...if that will help. But honestly....if you'll just post some pics of the operators station on your tractor we can tell you a lot more.

IF there is truly NO lever/selector present...then its possible it was removed or abused and sheared off.

On mine the lever/selector is held on a shaft that protrudes from the transmission housing by means of a 'roll pin' that could have sheared off or rusted out.

Or on the nefarious side....someone removed it to hide an issue with the transmission?

Anyway this is what 'I' have.

Thank you very much. Your tractor is laid out exactly like mine. I see where the hi-lo gear shift lever is supposed to go now, but it is broken off. Found messicks.com that had a pretty cool parts finder. Found the parts I would need to put the handle back on there. A little concerned about why it's broken off, wondering if that part of the transmission is locked up.

As a side note, is there a "blue-book" for tractors. I'm not really sure what this tractor is worth with the hours it has on it. My googling for a used tractor values has not been very fruitful.

Nope no blue book.

Hours play only a small roll in price, how it's equipped and condition are greater factors.

If it runs good and no major non working details, somewhere in the $2K base price.

If it has a FEL $2K to $4k added to base value.

And any mechanical inadequacies subtract from the value.

These go for $0 to $8k it all depends.

IF roll pin is sheared off....it should be easy enough to drift the remaining part out with a punch and make a makeshift lever to test the transmission range selections.

If the roll pin is gone altogether...to me that rather suggests an intentional removal (for what purpose I do not know).....but I would want to the know the entire condition of the tractor before purchase.

And NIW is spot on....with regards to value. (y)

Good luck with it, hope it works out for you.

Flint.

It does have a FEL, though it is an aftermarket Bush Hog M146, so I'm not sure if aftermarket FELs are more or less valuable. Tractor seems to run great, will try to get it in 4wd today, now that I know which lever it is. I'm not sure about the hi-lo. Not sure, for what I'm going to use it for, that it really matters if I have hi-low. Otherwise is seems to shift and drive pretty good. Sheet metal is kind of a mess.

Thank you for the input on value!

Looks like the handle itself broke off, the circular part that connects to the part coming out of the transmission is still there with a little nub of the handle. I'll need to get a closer look to see what the roll pin situation is. My handle is a little different than yours, but a very similar setup.

Thank you for your input!

Aftermarket loader do not detract from the valve, some loaders even add more than factory loaders of that time frame.
