L185 pipe plugs???

My L185 has 1/4 pipe plugs. One each side of the transmission housing opposite the transmission & PTO levers.
These plugs are well above the transmission fluid level.
Does anyone know what these plugs are for?
NOW I could open them up and peek inside but decided to ask.

I called my dealer and they told me that the pipe plugs hold a rod, spring and ball to help keep the shift lever in position.
Not to open those plugs.
