Recently purchased a 1977 L185DT and of course the way it sounds I have the
typical steering box trouble. I am confident it has a defective bushing on the steering shaft causing water to enter box. I was aware of this upon purchase.
It was not to bad at first but then would not turn at all. I added some gear oil to the box which at least would make it turn so I could move it. I have watched the video by Service Guy Vic and read the 2 repair listings. I realize this is a lengthy post however I am looking for some guidance. I will be removing the box and hopefully rebuilding it. After adding oil the steering wheel has at least one full revolution before action. My concern is not just bearings and seals but either the steering shaft or the pitman arm shaft is defective. In closing it seems like you can remove the dash and get it out of the way? Can you leave the fuel tank in place to remove the steering box assembly? The "mechanics" of this will not be a problem. Thanks in advance>
