Hi all

I'm definitely a newbie ;-)

I've scoured the forums but I'm still not sure what the problem might be. I picked up this unit on Friday and it only had 80 hours. I put about 5 hours on it this weekend tilling and using the FEL and had no issues. When I went to start it tonight it didn't turn over, wouldn't crank at all. The battery is still good, the lights will come on, the CHG light in the instrument panel lights up when I turn the key but dims when I turn the starter.

It rained last night, I wonder if that could have caused this problem?

I'm trying to source an oil filter and the I'll change the oil. Will also change the fuel filter. How exactly do I turn the engine over by hand?

Any other ideas?

thanks in advance!

Not sure about your specific model. With that in mind. Have you checked that all leavers and pedals are in a nutral position ie: pto lever disengaged or seat switch engaged. Just a thought

Good luck

It's basically an L185 I believe. Yes, I checked all levers and gears. Next step is to figure out if any wires have come loose and then figure out how to test the starter, plus change the oil and filters.

When I moved all of the levers and made sure they were where they were they were supposed to be it did click when I tried turning it over. I don't see where the safety switches are, so I will have to figure that out too.

thanks

Don't know if this is applicable or not (also a new tractor owner), but on my L235 this is a bayonet type wire connect on the left side of the engine that has come lose a time or two. Reconnecting it has me back in business pretty quickly.

What's the battery voltage? What does it drop to when you turn the key to start position?

Voltage should be above 13 with nothing on and should hold at 12 or better with key in start position. If not, suspect your battery.

Well, after all that it turned out to be the battery. Picked up a new one today and she turned over. Now it's on to changing out the fluids and filters. I'm skeptical about the filter the dealership gave me. I told them I needed a filter for the L185 with a Z751 engine and they gave me Kubota p/n 70000-34500 but it looks too big. The old filter was an XH filter from Korea p/n 15208-H8911 but is pretty beat up.

Any opinions out there about using synthetic oils? I'm looking at some Shell Rotella T6 synthetic stuff. It's rated for extreme temps and we range from 100 degrees to -40 so I thought it might be a good idea.

thanks again!

Update - success! The dealership did give me the wrong filter. Got the right one installed, changed the air and fuel filters while I was at it, swapped the glow plugs, and then had the pleasure of learning how to bleed the fuel lines.

I'm fairly proud that I got this working since I was the kid in shop class who took apart the small engine and left it in pieces in a box when the year was over :p

Now I can get back to my other projects!

thanks again, everyone.
