Gidday All, A friend of mine is looking for a mini ex to clean up a bush lot. He found a 1990 kx151 with wide pads that has been well used. The machine has 5600 hrs on it but the owner says it is worn but still runs quite well. His asking price is $20000 but the guy says it is very negotiable. It doesn`t sound like anything has been rebuilt on it as of yet. He says it's a 5.5 ton machine and has no leaks and still has lots of wear. Do you think it`s worth putting an offer in on it or is it a worn out headache to avoid. Thanks for any input you guys may have.:D

I personal think at 5600 hours, just about everything is about to go out.
Mini's are great but they can be very pricey to repair or rebuild!
Just a few parts can make a okay purchase, a really bad one. ;)

Wonder how negotiable he is. I would think 12k is a more reasonable price. With that kind of hours anything can break. You can get a early 2000's machine with half the hours for $20k.

I looked around on some 'for sale sites' and saw machines with under 2,000 hours, ten years newer for under $8K USD.

You found an opening bid price on an auction site, 2 years ago, it most likely sold for far more than that! ;)

ROFL, right you are!:p Though one was for $13,500 and was from the spring of 2015, 4,100 hours on a 1995.

I'd think at that price, they'd be in very good condition. I did a little looking, my gawd, are they all expensive! My neighbor has a CAT, bought new about 10 years ago, poorly maintained sadly. All the pins have 1/2" of play/wear, the control pedals/lever unbalanced but the engine is like new still. He is and it is the machine we drove into my lake last fall to excavate the silt. It sat 3' deep in the water for two days. Poor machine.:(

Thanks for the info guys. We are going to have a look at it tomorrow. I would think an older machine like that the parts availability may be an issue as well. I looked online for comparisons but the majority of mini exs don't seem to be that heavy.

You guys in the US seem to be able to get equipment much cheaper than us tax beaten Canadians!:)
Spare a thought for those of us overseas. At least you have a land border with the US that you could drive your new purchase across....

My employer has been buying may machines from Europe. Put em in a container and off they go.
