Any quality modern diesel spec oil will be fine for your engine.

I've used Kubota, Rotella, Delo, Valvoline, etc., in various Kubota diesel engines in the past.

Watch the ads and buy whatever is on sale.

Hydraulic oil or motor oil?

I too had sticker sock when I first got my BX. I've used Triax Agra UTTO LX hydraulic oil which you can get for about $21 / gallon in 5-gallon pails from Wally World. (you're going to need 3+ gallons with filter)

This last change I just went with Kubota SUDT2 because the price from my dealer was pretty good.

As for diesel rated motor oil as said above any good diesel motor oil is fine, but again, I went with what the dealer was stocking because it was priced well and was a one-stop shopping with all the filters included.

2.5 gallons of most any synthetic diesel oil is gonna run you at least 65 bucks, regardless of which flavor you like.

Cost of doing business.

That price sounds like Kubota SUDT2 transmission oil. Expect to be told there are no sound alternatives.

Tongue-in-cheek: $35K for a compact tractor-toy….. and these suburbanites fret over a few bucks of motor-oil..???

GAWD…. are we just surrounded by them…?

o_O

More seriously… Read the Owner/Operator Manual and it should be evident the brand of engine oil is not limiting. Delo400, SuperTech, Rotella…. take your pick… just pay attention that it is Diesel-rated and the correct viscosity for the season.

Guess what? you can also use just any-other brand of oil filter of standard quality. The tractor Does Not Care.

Never understood scoffing at the price of a few gallons of oil when it comes to such an expensive unit.

I once deliberately ran my own uncertified test: I bought a new ā€˜92 Jeep Cherokee with 4.0L straight-6 and used nothing but straight SAE 30 wt Quaker state and Fram filters every 5K miles…. until it had somewhere around 120K miles… and I noticed that SuperTech was bottled by the same folks as QS…. so I switched to SAE30 SuperTech and SuperTech filters (and the occasional Purolator filter when it was on-sale). Those were cheap oil changes.

I never used any other oils….and that Jeep was totaled in a rear-end accident at 330K miles. It was only JUST beginning to use almost a half-qt of oil between 5K mile oil changes.

Did QS and ST get that car to 330K miles…?? No.
BUT…. ordinary conventional QS and ST motor oil did not PREVENT that car from making 330K trouble-free miles.

Needless to mention, I am  when I see the hand-wringing, worrying, arguing, etc that goes on between the Amsoil/Castrol/RedLine/etc devotees.

I switched to Rotella for the engine, but I ā€œpay the manā€ and use the SUDT2 for the hydraulics.

Pretty sure you could have ran that 4.0 on peanut oil and it would have made it longer than a guy would think.

They were gutless, but absolutely indestructible.

The woman that owned my 89 Cherokee had no trouble killing the 4.0 in it. :devilish:

I bought it with 22K on the clock and quickly discovered it was totally sludged. It made it to ~80K before I was forced to replace the engine.

So now we know, 22k miles without an oil change on a 4.0 is too many.

Good info to have šŸ˜‚

I've used Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 for years. It meets Kubota spec and runs great for my often very cold start usage.

The 4.0L in my '98 TJ isn't gutless at all. The 4.56 gears I installed in the Jeep a month after buying it might help though. šŸ˜‚ The Banks header and exhaust system probably help too, but at 200 hp it's a very decent motor for that vehicle. I've had that Jeep for more than 25 years. I'm going to weld up another Poison Spyder roll cage for it this summer and sell the Poison Spyder cage that I installed in it years ago.

I recently bought 12 gallons of that stuff from Amazon because the oil I've been running for years is getting ridiculously expensive. I've been buying Schaeffer's fully sythetic 5W-40 for years but the price is nuts now.
