Ozzie, I'm not 100% sure on the L185 but on most Kubota's I have serviced there is a giant banjo bolt that you need to remove in order to access the filter. The bolt goes through the hydraulic line and atttaches it to the side of your transmission housing. The screen is on the end of the bolt. you can clean the screen a variety of ways, or just buy the whole bolt with screen to replace. I think its like $20-30. There are usually 0 rings or copper washers on each side of the banjo bolt that should be replaced at the same time.

The hydraulic filter is just off the pump in a tube, it's 3 bolts on the bottom cover, there is a spring inside to hold the filter in place.
I would plan on just changing the filter as I'm not sure if it's cleanable or not, and due to it's age it just wouldn't hurt to just change it and the O-ring that seals the cover too.

Ozzie,
If you are sitting in the tractor seat (facing forward), on my L185 the filter screen is on the left side of the tractor. It is on the side of the tractor. It is behind the foot board of the tractor. It is near the bottom of the side of the transmission. See the second picture of this post and you can barely see it.

The picture is looking down and back from standing in front of the rear wheel on the left side of tractor.

Looking on the other side of the tractor (right side if sitting on the seat) you will see a hard line running from the rear of the tractor toward the front of the tractor and going to the pump. At the rear point this line goes into the transmission case. I think it turns into a round fitting about 1.5 inches in diameter. Exactly on the other side of the tractor (on the left side) is the filter port.

What you are looking for is a bump with two bolts holding it on. The screen is behind that. There is an o-ring between the cover and the transmission case. I recall that there is a spring and then the filter screen. The end of the filter screen has a hole in it and you may have to grab it with a needle nose plier to get it out.

I recommend that you get a new screen, O-ring and spring. You will drain all of your fluid when you do this unless you have drained it before you start taking the filter out. You don't want to have to take this apart again for a while due to the cost of the fluids (UDT is ~$100 if I recall correctly).

The screen on mine, different model but same vintage, comes in from the left side at the bottom of the case, directly across from the suction line. Same as what Russell King describes. The screen was tubular, maybe 1" diameter and 8" long if I remember right. Cost was about $15 from my dealer.

Russell,
Does your L185F have the other filter I showed?

I have seen one or both filters before.
Wolfman,

I am 99.9% sure it only has the small filter in the side of the tractor. I will have to look at it in more detail but I do not recall seeing anything like what you showed anywhere on the right side of the tractor. I had never even looked at that last "oil pressure" file on the Kubota site so had never even knew there was a possibility of a different filter.

Wolfman,

I looked at my tractor today and it does not have that filter like you posted.
