Hi all. Picked up a 1987 Kubota G5200H for free. After getting it to run, I found out why it was free. Previous owner thought the trans was toast but turns out it was just the propeller shaft and coupling. My question is, can I weld the coupling to the shaft and reinstall it? I do not see why I cannot. I get the shaft and coupling in without it being seperated. I work in a machine shop and can get it concentric within. 005". Thoughts?

I have a G5200 with the D600 engine. AG tires on the rear too. This thing is a workhorse considering it is lawn-tractor. Can scrape a driveway for hours on a couple gallons of fuel. I also use it to move trailers around. I moved a twin-snowmobile trailer this past weekend. Much easier to use little tractor to back it into the woods with 2 sleds on it than to use a big pickup truck.

The Eaton #11 hydro unit is bulletproof. ( http://www.eaton.com/ecm/groups/public/@pub/@eaton/@hyd/documents/content/pll_1616.pdf )

My thoughts on your question... GO FOR IT... it is not worth much as it is but can be a usefull tool if you get it working.

All the manuals and exploded parts-lists are available online. I printed them all out and made up a 3-ring binder for my G5200.

If it's stripped where it slips in coupling on the baxk of the engine, I'd hesitate trying to weld it. There is a rubber damper in there. Keeps engine vibration from being transmitted through the shaft.

I have the prop shaft out of the tractor now. I ordered the replacement parts already. I am going to make a sleeve to keep it lined up and get it welded up today. Worse case, new parts are on the way.

I went ahead and machined a hex into the coupling and welded on a piece of hex stock the the prop shaft. Dry fit it for adjustment and had it welded up. Runs true (within .003") and installed it today. No vibrations, no issues with installing. Cut the lawn today and it did great. Free tractor + $130 in belts, battery, oil change, trans fluid change and a can of diesel.
