Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum and kubota in general. I've always heard great things about them so I'm going to use one for my next project.

I build custom golf carts and want to do a diesel swap. I found a full complete motor on Craigslist. He took it out of a grasshopper 718D and was going to use it for a project of his.

He is asking $990 and the motor has 1400 hours. I'm not sure if that is a lot of hours or not. Is what he asking reasonable price?

Is there a place I can get a owners manual and service manual for rebuilding if need be?

That would be a good deal on the engine with that many hours, which really on a diesel is not that many. Getting that to "hook" up should be fun.

we love pictures of stuff like that - so when you get it going, send us pictures.:)

It's going to be fun with not doing it before but it should be pretty cool when it's done lol.

Is the motor stock pretty good for driving around? Or does it work best with a small turbo on it?

In Grasshopper language 718D is a mower with an out front deck. The frame was designated a 7 (7), 18 HP engine (18), diesel powered (D). The engine powered two hydraulic pumps to power the drive wheels.

I think the electric clutch on the back of the engine powered the hydraulic pumps which powered the machine and allowed turning.

The PTO shaft powered the mower deck.

Not really, if you are going to use it for golfing. Those guys don't want any noise around when their contemplating life and death decisions!!:D

If you are using the golf cart as a side x side then no problem.

Do they have quite a bit of power and torque stock? Or they sluggish and slow?

Depending on what you are hauling around, other than yourself, you will find even at the 14hp the torque will be excellent. Diesels are torque monsters, however - you will need to get the drivetrain tweaked to get the torque you wish.

This engine is designed to run up in the RPMS, so you will find the best torque there. Here is some further reading on the matter:

So I see some of these motor have turbos on them. Is there much benefit to adding the turbo and intercooler and stuff?

Your not going to get a huge gain out of putting a turbo on it, maybe 2 hp if your lucky.
