Recently I put a hockey puck through my BX front mount blower. I made a gearbox replacement video and 5-year owner review video (both linked at the end of this new video).

Here is my new video where I open the old gearbox and see why it started slipping. Enjoy!

Only in Canada do you hear, broke the snowblower with a hockey puck!🤣

Don't use a solid pin, just use another good quality spring pin.
Spring pins hold their place via pressure on the walls, where a solid pin can't do that.

Spring pins are usually really hard and I wouldn't expect it to break under any conditions. If that pin sheared, I'd check whether the shear bolts on the auger and fan are the right ones. I would expect them to go first. If they're like the bolts I've seen, they should have a small groove where the outer diameter of the shaft intersects the bolt, and it should be some soft grade. Nice video

Thank you!

They are all the correct shear-pins, I purchased them from Kubota.

Great video to explain the problem and the final solution, looks like a low cost repair in the end, we all like those situations!

You do know that dealerships and parts guys mess up too! ;)
100% true NIW ... I've got a spare shear pin in the behind-seat-storage of the BX ... I'll go take a photo for you guys after I've had a coffee and put the kids on the bus. The shear bolts do have the " small groove where the outer diameter of the shaft intersects the bolt " as described by marklbota. Not the 2nd stage fan shear bolt though ... it has a regular looking small bolt ... still purchased from Kubota.

Those grooved shears pins are almost a must, when used on a shaft turning inside a pipe, as is the case on the augers and also on the older 2750D fan configuration. When they let go, they do so very cleanly, with no deformation of the left over pieces. This allows the piece left on the shaft inside the pipe to slide out with hardly any effort when installing a new shear bolt. If you use a soft bolt, the shear will cause the piece left in the shaft to deform, and you will learn a totally new vocabulary trying to remove it.

As it turns out I had ample opportunity today to take a photo of my shear bolts ... because I needed one haha. Enjoy!
