That joint was a MOD from a B7100 or the like, propeller shaft.

Hi Dan, once again you are being most generous with your expert knowledge. I don't want the shaft or something else to break once I start to use the mower deck. Do you think if I leave what I have constructed so far but incorporate a Ruland Jaw Coupling, as in the attached picture in the middle of the new shaft it will be sufficient? I had, obviously incorrectly, assumed that the
original universal joint would take up any play.

If you have room to fit it in a chain coupler is inexpensive and much more robust. I would like it better placed close to one supported end rather than in the middle of the span but you have a lot invested in your current machine work.

Hi Dan, I hadn't expected a replay till I got home this evening given the time difference but thank you. I will explore chain couplers but from what I have managed to look at so far they require a key in the shaft and I don't have the expertise, knowledge or equipment to create one on my shaft. I think there would be room at the crackshaft flange end as the PTO end would be too close to the underside of the radiator, once again I will have to explore tolerences. Thank you Bernie

I appreciate your limitations with machine work Bernie but in the long run you are going to be much happier with a keyed connection rather than a rigid welded joint. You can buy keyed shafting and if need be you can tack weld or pin the crankshaft half of the coupler to the shaft. I think it would handle the runout better than what you have now. Give me a little bit and I will draw something up for you. If I can draw it your friend with a lathe can easily make it.

Edit: On my PC and looking at your pictures again - much ceasier to see the details. Your coupler is closer to the bearing on the clutch than I thought. If you eliminated most of the runout in the hub and shaft assembly you may be fine with that OEM joint. I am not a fan of that design but you can always revisit that connection if it fails.
