On my Dad's B8200, when I operated the Right Rear Brake Pedal, there was a loud chatter or grating sound. I cleaned it up and removed the cover plate from the brake drum housing which is located just forward of the real wheel shaft. The brake shoes come off with the cover, exposing the drum and housing. Pretty obvious the problem is leakang of the tractor fluid out of the gear box. Removal of a snap ring and the brake drum slides right off the splined shaft and you're looking right at the shaft and seal. I removed the wheel now to make it easier to work on.

A really solid looking lip seal with a small flange. Of course I need to get it out of there and I am wondering if anyone has a trick up their sleeve for how to do this. I was hoping to get a thin chisel under the flange to help it get started. Also, I do have a slide puller and I may have to drill or die grind a hole in the metal part of the seal so I can use a slide hammer puller. Any other ideas will be appreciated. I have to make sure I don't damage the shaft or the housing at the seal area.

I am hoping to clean the brake drum and the brake pads with brakekleen in hopes that it will be good enough. After that if it is still bad I can replace the pads easy enough.

Thanks,
Barry

Tried pulling the seal today. No problem. I thought it would be a much tighter fit. I found a tool in my Dad's shop that I felt I might get a pry on the flange part of the seal. As soon as I got it in there it hung up on the lip. I gave it a few pops with my fist, relocated, repeat. Soon enough, it started working the seal out. I thought it might be much tougher. Now I am confident I can finish the job no problem, just need to get the seal and the gasket ordered and I should be good to go.

Suggest thoroughly cleaning the sealing area, ensure there's no fretting consider using a sealant (Permatex #3) on the mating surfaces, make sure to install it squarely. Good luck

Thanks for the heads up! I'm encouraged that even though I lifted the seal off it's seat, there is still no tractor fluid leaking out. I'm still waiting for parts to show up. I left the fluid in in case I need to move the tractor before I get the parts. I was considering Permatex No. 2, and even RTV gasket maker. No.3 might make it hard to pull next time? It appears there was no sealant on original installation. Once I see the seal, it will be easier to consider if the seal has a rubber outer coating.
thanks again,
Barry

Got the parts yesterday. Worked on it today. Seal looks great, rubber coated and stout. Cleaned everything up to put together. Used No.2 Permatex as a sealer/lubricant to drive the seal in.. Seal was very difficult to get started and I am concerned that I messed ti up. Tough getting it started. Slight offset in driver due rear wheel flage.
Due concern about driving the seal in, I will wait to put transmission fluid in and check for any leakage before putting the rear wheel back on.......wish I was more positive.

Decided not to put tractor fluid in. Close inspection of the seal I drove in revealed I damaged the rubber coating and can see where it turned up slightly and is under the flange section. I ordered two more seals in case I mess up the next one too. This time I am going to make a collar to fit up behind the brake drum so that I can use the brake drum to press it in nice and square. Anybody got a better idea I would like to hear it.

Got my new seal for the brake drum shaft. To get a good straight press, I machined (bored) out the inside of a short piece of pipe so that it would slip fit over the brake drum. Then I tack welded a washer to the opposite end. It slipped right over the brake drum center and came up against the shoulder and the washer went flush against the washer. Got a nice straight push on the seal and it went it nicely.
All done.
