I have a leak which appears to be from the middle of the axle cover on the inside.I havent done more than degrease and hose it but it appears to be from the middle near the axle and runs down the outside of the inside cover. Any ideas? I dont think its the gasket because of the run of oil but cant see the origin of the leak.

A picture or two would really help. Is it leaking from up by the transmission housing, or down by the axle spindles? There is nothing to leak from on the inside shell half, unless there is a crack by the weld. After 35 years of operation there could be a leak by the gasket between the reduction gear shell and the transmission case.
The geometry of their rear axle/spindle is scary - there is only about 3" between the spindle bearings. But I had dualies on my L185DT, and never had a serious problem - just replaced a seal one time. I had a 7" spacer out to the outside wheel! They are tough tractors.

thanks for replying. Cant do photos at the mo but am thinking it may be rust or a weld as suggested.I really need to take the wheel off and look closer but appears to be the axle area halfway up the inside case
