I have what may be a stupid question, but being new to diesels.
Except for large Bucket Trucks and Chippers, that shut down with a key.

Is it Okay to turn the key off after the engine is running, assuming you do not need lights or horn?

Three times I have shut down the tractor with the fuel lever and came back to a dead battery.
I do realize the battery is not the best but it works so i see no need to replace now.

No it's not good to turn the key off while running.

#1 The battery will not get charged
#2 Any wired gauges and warning lights will not work.
#3 It's just a bad habit to get into! Tie a leash from the key to you, till you get in the habit of turning off.

Oil light comes on when you shut it down. So maybe bulb is out? I always check dash before exiting machine. I also flip key of before i stop engine.
