Thankfully not in the tractor yet, but when I went to town and filled the can I happened to notice (after I got home the receipt says I bought kerosene.

Now I seam to remember in a pinch Kero could be substituted for #1 but was generally not recommended. Though I also seem to remember that was only older tractors and modern engines don't like it as all.

So My dilemma is do I pour it in cross my fingers, Find someone at work that can use 2.5 gal of Kero, or buy another can for the kero pour it off set it on the shelf and use it as lighter fluid over the next 5 years.
if I use it do I need to blend it with more Diesel if so what ratio is appropriate 50/50 60/40 more extreme less?

Equipment wise I am running a B1700 (Hydro static Transmission I forgot the letters designating that.

I would mix it with diesel in about a 4:1 ratio, 4 parts diesel 1 part kerosene.
Kerosene is much drier than diesel and doesn't have as much lubricating properties as diesel.

I have never heard of kerosene being dyed. Off highway diesel is dyed red. How was the pump labeled that it came from?

Call the store and verify how off highway diesel is labeled on their receipt.

Could be a former Kerosene pump. Store up the road from me switched their's because hardly anybody bought kerosene and everyone wanted diesel.

I would call the store and ask about it.

It was red that is why I didn't notice until I read the receipt at home.
If it was red it's very unlikely it's kero as kero is clear.

If the price was in the $2.50 /Gal range it's not kero as kero is $4.00 /Gal range.

If it is kero your b1700 would run on it without any issues, but if you wanna be safe just mix it 50/50 to keep the lubrication of it up.

What color is dyed diesel?

All diesel sold in the United States typically has some dye in it. On-road diesel usually has a slight green tint to it. This is a dye added by either the refiner or terminal provider with the fuel. Off road diesels are dyed red to denote that the fuel is untaxed and is for use in off-road purposes only.

Here in NY all kerosene that i have bought the last few years has been dyed red, the same as off road diesel.I have only seen clear kero sold in 1 gal. prefilled and sealed containers.

Do you remember what pump you got it from? Why not just phone the station and ask?

What does it SMELL like? Diesel? Or Kero?

Kero added to a can that has dyed-diesel residue may have a red tint to it from the previous contents.

For 2.5 gallons of unknown fuel you are going to risk using it either as it is or mix it with Diesel is pretty foolish. Cut your loses and use the unknown fuel for something else. Next time make sure you notice if the pump indicates Diesel or Kerosene. I would never risk damaging my engine experimenting with a unknown fuel. No matter what recommendations you get from this forum, you are responsible for your actions and the consequences they cause.

As Geohorn states, Diesel and kero have very different smells. In my area there is no rhyme or reason with dyed or clear kero, although one station I questioned said that if the pump hose made it possible to fill a road vehicle directly, then dye had to be added to kero.
I personally would not hesitate to use up a small amount of kero in my tractor up to 50/50. Before using anti gel winter additives I would cut my Diesel with up to 50% kero in the winter (but usually more on the order of 10-25%).

NIW is 100% spot on, for all the things he mentioned.

You could also buy a "lubricity" additive almost anywhere. Even if it was straight kerosene, the tractor would run it just fine. Dumping the lubricity additive in it would ease any fears of the injection pump or injectors not getting enough lube...

Seems like some very interesting suggestions to save 2.5 gallons of unknown fuel. Only a fool would risk his tractor engine over 2.5 gallons of unknown fuel.
