Just got a used (477hrs) L5240 for i think a steal if it don't cost to much to fix. The back housing on the rear end is busted up and was attempted to be welded. Its not the center housing its just outside of it. Looks to be the brake housing but not sure. If anyone has a parts breakdown and/or repair manual that would be a great help. Thanks in advance

It sounds like the rear axle housing. The brake is inboard from that. I doubt it will be cheap to replace, but I guess that depends on your definition of cheap. Hope you didn't pay much for the tractor.

I think someone on here recently needed a rear axle for a smaller L series tractor with a similar problem and I think it was priced out at $1,800 and some change. So I can see a larger L being abour $2000-2500

Everything works on the tractor just fine. Its just one of the outer housings on the rear end thats been busted and attempted to be welded. I didn't pay but $14,900 out the door for it. It looks like a pretty simple repair. I just need a parts breakdown and prob the manual for torques.

Axle housings don't just break like you snapped a twig, you have to do something really dump or be completly reckeless with a tractor to put a crack in it. Any chance you can put up a picture so we can get a better idea of what your dealing with?

Yeah that's nasty ugly, I'm pretty sure the entire axle housing would need to be replaced. That is right at the brake assembly but its all machined together into one piece.

Well even if i have $2500 in repairs then i think i still did pretty good. Those tractors still go for over 20,000 with over 700 hrs on them. His original price was 16000

Don't know what the inside looks like and how much damage is really done. Could be expensive could be cheap. It's all in how much you want to spend on it. If plain stupidity and roughness broke an axle housing which doesn't typically brake, what else could be wrong with the tractor beyond what you see.

I just looked at the parts book (by the way thank you for the link) it is actually the RH brake case.

You scored on that tractor for that price!!!!

I almost wonder if they cracked the housing reefing on it with a chain binder when they were hauling it. Then the dealer didn't want to deal with it...

Nice job on the repair. Didn't look like too big a deal to me and you definitely read it right.

Again congrats, I'm jealous!

Kind regards,

Steve

No it looks like something metal hit it. It has a large scratch on the 3pt lift cylinder and i sure can't imagine any kinda wood would have done that lol. But i inspected everything surrounding the housing and nothing else was hurt so should be good to go. She's purring like a kitten. Much better than my B7800....dang rattle box lol
