Just a rant

I just came up from mowing through the old orchard, and there are a bunch of trees that will be fire wood, So I figured I might see what some young trees might cost me to replace them, odds are I will never see fruit from them but maybe the next guy will. JEZUS JUMPIN KRIST!!!!! Talk about sticker shock, I dont have a problem paying a fair price for things, but 60 to 70 bucks for a 4 /5 foot bare rooted tree is a bit much. A tree that may or may not make it through the winter. If I still had the green houses in place I could pot them up winter them over and plant in the spring. I know the price of everything has gone through the roof and farmers are having a tough row to hoe , but dayum I find it hard to spend over a half a G for a half dozen trees

Daughter bought a couple in the Summer for quite a bit less. She bought them at a local Walmart.

Should be some end of season really good deals about now.
Why not put them in big pots, wrap them, and bury the pots in a big pile of mulch.
In SW, PA they should do OK over the Winter.

$10 a foot was the going price, here a long time ago.
Helped neighbour ,down the road, remove 24 or 26 apple trees. Too tall, great apples though. ALL fruit trees are 'high maintenance' and seeing how he's 84, didn't want to waste whatever time he has left..tending to the trees.
NO 'soft fruits' grown in the Niagara Fruit Belt for decades....no money, easier to grow grapes for wine, especially $$$ ice wine !

Skeets - as you know it’s best to think about planting trees early spring and fall when the trees are dormant.

Maybe you can find something in a few weeks.

We’ve been in the 80’s and dry lately. Not a good time for planting trees.

Planted 2 apple and 2 cherry trees 5 months ago. Had enough apples for an apple crisp and a bowl of cherries. Not lots, but they usually do produce in the very first year. Looking forward to next years output.
