Junk Email

Yes thats something we all get, for new windows or auto warranties or gawd knows what else. This morning, I went and checked my email for something from the Kid,, nothing from her, however there were 42 Emails for see my pictures, watch what me and my girl friend are doing, on and on and on! Yeah I know someone is going to say well stay away from those sites,, I do not visit those sites!
I am do to old to worry about what one girl is doing to another or what some girl is doing to her self in the shower,,, well you get the idea. I keep blocking the ones that pop up, but that dont stop them, the hits just keep coming. Anybody have any ideas on how to stop this crap?

Skeets, I think you have to turn off that Alexia thing. It knows what you're thinking and responds accordingly.

Seriously, it has to be a control feature you do not have clicked on your computer. I use FF with a couple of add-ons and I never see that crap.

Skeets, I don't get that kind of stuff in my emails, but I do get friend requests on facebook from all sorts of weirdos sporting extra large mostly exposed breasts. I sometimes comment on NRA site or other things I belong to and think they troll there for innocents like me.

Someone you know or who is in your contact list visits goofy sites.... and then someone will send out an email to a dozen or more folks....and all those email addresses are in the “TO:” address-line...or in the “CC:” addressline. If any ONE of those people get on a SPAM list... then the spammer suddenly has a bunch of email addresses...and what is a gold-mine to spammers....those are all KNOWN VALID email addresses. That’s how you get on those spammers’ mail lists.

How to stop that?

Firstly, tell your friends who send out mass-emails to STOP using the “CC” or the “TO” address-lines When listing all those email addresses. If you MUST send out a mass-email..... Put mass-email addresses in the “BCC:” address-line....so that all those email-addresses are BLIND and cannot be seen... nor can they be copied by spammers.... AND... when someone “REPLIES TO ALL”..... the long list of recipients don’t actually get the reply.... or the SPAM!

FB is where you can get a lot of scammers, I quit that years ago and will not respond to anything that has the FB symbol. I use to get all kinds of emails from friends and family that I knew wasn’t real.. till I quit FB.

Years ago I signed up for e-mail alerts from our local (at the cabin) USFS. Everything was fine for years, then a new employee took over those e-mailings and sent out "CC" e-mails as GeoHorn mentioned above.
Immediately (that day) we began getting inundated with every kind of spam e-mail you can imagine. (except porn)
We get on the average 120-150 per day.
They go directly into the junk mail folder, but they constantly change their addresses to try to get around that. Our mail provider takes the attitude that it is normal these days, & the only alternative is to change our e-mail address.
I put spam e-mails in the same category as robo calls- we put men on the moon in the sixties, and we can't stop this crap?

What email service are you using? Most of them have fairly smart spam filters that will learn what to consider spam as you train it - report as spam and eventually you should see that sort of thing slow down (at least in the inbox)

It's Apple mail through COX. Like I said, it doesn't get to the inbox, but still comes through to the "junk" mailbox. I wish I could fire back 10,000 crap mails to each spammer who sends me one.

Yeah, unfortunately not much you can do about it then. You probably already know this but whatever you do, don't reply or "unsubscribe" - all that does is confirms you're a real target and then they sell it as a "confirmed email address" to other spammers.

Yup, had a hard time convincing the wife of that at first, but she's on board now.

Here’s how I got mine under control. We have Cox Cable as our ISP but most ISP’s have similar setups. Log into webmail on your providers website. Then set up filters using their tools. Don’t try to do it with the sender’s email address. Instead, pick words out of the message body or subject line. If the spam meets my filter rules, I send it to spam just in case it is a valid email. Since I started doing this, my spam is down to about 1 email per week.

A second method is to log into your webmail, and move the message from your inbox to your spam/junk folder. The ISP’s spam filter picks up on your actions and will start doing that automatically after about one or two messages.

You can‘t do this through your Microsoft Email very effectively. It has to be done through your webmail on the ISP website. Emails Go there and are then routed to your pc/apple email.
