re: You only lose money if you sell the stocks at a loss.
OR... the company goes out of business !!
I have enough WORTHLESS shares of STELCO to wallpaper my house.
The largest steel company in Canada(had 10,000 employed when I was there ), my shares were bought at $33+- , went down to $1. Yup a BUCK...

I have a worthless piece of paper saying I own 39,000 shares of Nortel 😪. That hurt because I was in a blackout position when it started tanking and couldn't dump it. I guess no company is too big to fail if the government stays out of it.

I fully understand the objects in investment and stocks. I'm collecting from a pension plan that obviously relies on thus. In long term your not going to loose money in a company like john deere. Most issues with values are over estimations and inflated bonuses, mismanagement. I just have a problem with taking it out on the backs of the people that are making your products. There is a fine line between making money and being greedy.
And c2cat I see owe you an apology. Reading back over this I realized I gave you the wrong finger. Meant to use thumb to say ok, whatever let's move on.

Spoken like a true snowflake
That's how you treat fellow traveling men. You should be ashamed. If you read my last post I apologized. Wrong finger.

wow... your funny...apologizing to the guy for giving him the finger but not for calling me greedy, the killer of American manufacturing, etc...

My skin is thick, I am sure not going to let guys like you bother me.

I guess skin is thick due to fact i wore out more coveralls than a person can count in a lifetime and cleaned out enough stuff out from under my finger nails to fill an olympic sized swimming pool. It was a lifetime working in all forms of agriculture (like my father used to tell us we work sun up to sunset to make a living for our families).

I still remember the days when a good man would work hard to harvest 6 bushels of wheat a day!! and still need to attend to the homestead and family now that was hard work / hardly greed!!

I now be too old to work but am not ashamed that I worked hard enough and saved enough to buy a few shares in a company like Deere yet according to you I am:

- GREEDY
- the cause of the demise of American manufacturing and
- that I make things all about ME.

so be it... nice to be blamed for the demise of American manufacturing. Still not going to add that to my obit though.

My skin is thick and attacks from guys like you mean little knowing the life I led and what I was able to give to my family. My conscious is clean.

I do respect your work ethic, however you are the one that said you don't care where the stuff is made as long as you make money.

In order for 1 guy to win and get rich there needs to be a whole lot of losers. It's called capitalism.

Had a couple friends that worked at Nortel, luckily they both found other jobs...
GM in the USA technically went bankrupt. The guv should NOT have bailed them out.
Selectively meddling in businesses stinks.

I agree, my GM stock went to zero while the gubbermint took care of the union to buy votes. Of course those "workers" should keep a pension and I count for nothing.

Theres a lot of home-brew economists weigh-ing in here…with zero understanding of the realities of the stock market or corporate finance.
Have you been to Mexico? I have. The people in the larger cities are affluent or middle class with good jobs and no need to come here. Most who come here are the rural poor.
Most who come here are not Mexican.…they come from further south.

Workers (including Union members) at large corporations are more important than CEOs, Officers, and to a degree, some stock investors. Workers are citizens. Real People. Corporations are artificial ”people”. Thos Jefferson had it right.

I agree the gov’t should restrain itself from bailing out large corp’s and banks…. but if they DO…then there should be a change of management…and the entity ownership should be transferred to the employees unless the corp/bank can negotiate a pay-back plan.

I worked for Otis Elevator when we closed our manufacturing plant in the U.S. and moved it to Mexico. We had all sorts of issues with it being down there and eventually moved it all back. JD needs to think this through....

I visited Chihuahua City in 2019. I was amazed at the modern factories everywhere, mostly US companies: Ford, Polaris, GE, and many more. All with newly built corporate housing subdivisions nearby. And the BNSF has a railway that goes from Chihuahua directly to Santa Theresa, NM port of entry. I don’t like to see US manufacturing move out of the country, but this situation sure makes more sense than buying goods from China.

Whether it's outsourced to Mexico or China, it's still the same.

In a nutshell...

Americans lose jobs, be white collar or blue, jobs are GONE.
American guv loses income from taxes. Neither Mexican or Chinese employees pay American taxes.
American businesses fold. I'm talking about the 'local' businesses near the plants. The diners, 7/11s,bars, etc.
