You are correct that the requirements for an HST system are less than required of a gear drive tractor. And virtually any fluid can act as a hydraulic fluid insofar as being incompressible and pumpable. Not all fluids are compatible with all seal materials and some fluids are better lubricants than others.

In all probability your seals are compatible with almost any petrolium oil. Hopefully the TSC oil offers sufficient lubricity, although, again, they are using weasel words rather than claiming to have actually been tested against a specified standard. I have a far more detailed and much more trustworthy analysis from Infineum that covers multiple house brands. What it revealed is that with the exception of the yellow bucket crap they were all decent GL4 level gear lubes. Some better than others. The yellow bucket crap was horrible and certainly not up to GL4 standards.. The surprise player was Harvest King which was actually pretty top of the heap.

Your Duratran product is a pretty close match. I looked it up once but I don't remember if it claims the same level of water tolerance as the others.

I was impressed by how close it was when I researched it but I could not find a source in the USA.

Keep in mind these viscsoity numbers are not exact specifications.

KV40 is used to grade hydraulic oil.
ISO 42 has a KV40 viscosity in the range 38cSt to 46cSt.
ISO 68 would be 61cSt to 75 cst.
So these tractor hydraulic oils are "tweeners". Close is good enough even for equipment OEMs.

KV100 is used to grade gear oil,
SAE 80 has a KV100 in the ramge 8.5 cSt to <11.0 cST.
All of these UTTOs pretty much fall in that range and again these are multi-function oils so close is good enough.

The thing that separates UTTO from conventional gear and hydraulic oil is viscosity index. Traditional gear and hydraulic oils are monogrades with a VI around 100. The defacto industry standard for UTTO is 130+ which makes these oils multigrades.

Oils like SUDT2 and JD J20D are cruisning way up there with VIs at or near 200. That and their ability to suck up and dissolve not disperse/emulsify water is what separates them from the middle class.

I do know that wallymart is a universal cr@p marketing company that squeezes it's suppliers to the point of breaking so wally can sell you even cheaper cr@p
SuperTech Heavy Duty THF is produced by Citgo. Big Oil versus Big Retail in a squeezing match. That would be worth the price of admission.

Interestingly I stumbled on this while looking up the source for Wallyworld THF. Looks like Ciitgo has a J20D/SUDT2 clone. Mighty fine looking PDS. I will bet it aint what Wallyworld is selling and probably not cheap if/when you find it..

Well I think the real question that needs to be solved is

"What is the absolute best self defense round? 9mm, .45 acp, .40 S&W, or 10mm

Because from what I heard, 9mm can bounce off of leather jackets and does not penetrate, 10mm is too big to carry and illegal in 4 states, and .40 over penetrates........So I guess it must be 45 acp.




Problem solved....Now for some Middle Eastern talk.........

PetroCan seems to be well aware of the difference. They list regular Duratran (conventional) as a suitable replacement for UDT and Duratran XL (semi-syn) as equivalent to SUDT2.

What is weird is that I don't think Petro Canada sells in the US, and SUDT-2 is not available up here.
