Is the max allowable RPM the "rated revolution" shown in the owner's manual?

Neither the MX nor the M have red line indicators on the tachometers so what's the maximum RPM allowed? Do these tractors have rev limiters to prevent over revving the engine? I'm not concerned about the MX because the rpm is set with the throttle slider, but the M with its low gearing and accelerator make it very easy to rev the engine above the rated value.

M6060 manual states rated rpm is 2,400 and PTO 540/540E rpm is at 2,160/1,828.
MX6000 manual states rated rpm is 2,700 and PTO 540 rpm is at 2,660

Rated RPM is where the engine HP is also rated.

The marked RPM on the tach results in 540 RPM on the PTO shaft.

The engine on a diesel has a governor and can not (normally) run above a limiting RPM but the engine could run above that RPM but generally not for very long before it blows up.

Rated rpm is the engine speed that delivers the advertised horsepower. The computer won't let you overspeed the engine. In other words, as far as you can push the throttle lever or stomp the foot throttle is oh-tay. In a runaway situation, all bets are off.

I understand what the RPM mark on the MX tachometer means and also what the M6060 manual means re engine rpm and pto rpm, but I wasn't sure if I could safely run the M6060 over 2,400 rpm. It's a relief to know that the engine rpm is governed so that I can't damage the engine. There can be a lot going on in the cab, when it's all new anyway, and I've exceeded 2,500 rpm a few times.

Thanks very much. That's a big relief. Not a problem with the hand throttle in the MX but easy to rev the engine way past 2,500 rpm with the accelerator pedal when not paying attention.

There's high rated rpm (loaded) top rpm (max rpm) low rated rpm (lowest rpm under load) and low rpm (idle rpm, or no load rpm) most people only care about rated, idle and top. As mentioned the govenor will limit top no load rpm. You can "over rev" the engine but it's not just gonna blow up because it went a few hundred rpm over max. Kinda hard to do with a tractor anyway. Unless your going highway speeds with a heavy load.

Both tractors have hand throttles. Before everyone needed a foot throttle thats all they had. You set your rpm, selected the gear you wanted and got to work. It's not a car. It's governed. My dad is especially bad for this on his L. So worried about stomping the foot pedal. Much easier once you've done the job a few times. Set the rpm and forget about it. The foot pedal is most handy for transport and loader work.

The gearing is kind of low on the M6060. I'm using L3 or L4 when pulling the rotary cutter since that's the 3 to 5mph range, if that makes sense. The problem with the hand throttle and foot throttle is that the manual says to shift the shuttle at low rpm. So when I'm running the rotary cutter it doesn't seem like a good idea to use the hand throttle to rev the engine to 1,830 (540E speed), then move the shuttle to get going. I'm dropping the revs to around 1,000, turning the PTO on, then using the foot throttle to get moving and get the rpm to around 1,830. I'm probably doing this all wrong.

There's a learning curve for sure.

Get the pto going. Set rpm, set shuttle let off the "clutch" pedal. The t4.75 I ran was set up with a hydro shuttle. I road bank mowed with it a lot. You can just toss the shuttle in forward or reverse but the take off with pto enguaged is nicer when using the clutch pedal. Or get to speed with the foot throttle and set your hand throttle. No need to hold it at desired rpm with your foot.

I did just that today and when combined with the rpm management feature it makes pulling the rotary cutter a really pleasant job. I still need more practice but it was a good 5 hours this afternoon cutting the field. I'm very pleased with the M6060.

Fwiw, my RPMs are higher going down steep hill WOT vs sitting still with my tiny compared to a MX, L2501.

It's not much but maybe 50 RPM. I'm working from the assumption that WOT never hurts other than how much fuel you use. I regularly run WOT pulling my grader/scraper.

I do have a HST. It could be different with a gear drive.
