Interesting video on why good people should have guns.

Some school districts in Kansas are offering a training course for teachers who volunteer to carry. It's designed for protection of all in the school, so it won't be known as a soft target.

Listening to the radio yesterday an 84 year old, retired teacher, called to tell her side of the story of violence. She mentioned at the end she carries a concealed weapon.

I have told this story a thousand times so if you have read it, I apologize. I just want to make sure the word gets out.

A neighbor of mine who was a close friend was a "mover and shaker" in the Phoenix social scene. One evening, a year or so after 9-11, a group at a party was gathered around the recently retired head of one of the Arizona law enforcement agencies. This retired officer was recounting a conference hastily assembled by the new Department of Homeland Security at a conference center in Spokane, WA. The topic of the conference was terror threats against our nation.

One of the threats uncovered immediately following 9-11 was a Chechen-styled attack on American schools. Only instead of one school, the plot involved several schools. The idea was to take over a half dozen schools on the same day and then herd all the kids to the lunchroom which would be wired with explosives (as was done in Chechnya) and then, all at a predetermined hour, most likely while on TV, they would detonate all the schools. The plan was to kill 3000-5000 American school children in one day.

Today, after years of completely unattended borders, the likelihood of combatants inside our country in great numbers is very likely. In fact, on national news media, I have heard estimates as high as 4-5000 Jihadi fighters, already inside our borders, waiting to activate. Only a thousand of these guys would be needed to take over 100 schools in our country. The results would be horrific.

Can teachers take on Jihadi warriors bent on killing? Perhaps that is a stretch but some defense is better than no defense. We know what will happen to those kids if the attackers achieve their end result.

The instances of armed school principals stopping violence by one student is already compelling enough to warrant arming those who meet guidelines and pass training. As someone who worked armed for a decade, with training, both initial and recurrent, carrying a firearm is extremely safe. History has shown us in agonizing detail how the lack of any means of protection only ensures mass casualties.

One need only look at the track record of the locations where teachers and, in the case of colleges, students, have been allowed to attend class armed and the risk is proven to be very low.

Call me weird but, if my kid were still in school, I would take comfort in knowing that a few of the teachers were able to provide a defense if called upon.

Ray, great point :D Wife and I went through a concealed carry class last month. It was very eye opening ;)

There has been an escalation of violence in Little Rock, which is 20 miles south of us. Someone or a group are going around doing drive by shootings  The police are having a hard time getting a handle on it. Someone is indiscriminately driving around the city, and unloading on a random vehicle

Good for you both Daren!

The most important thing is to get your wife out on the range and make her work her gun until she comfortable and confident with it. There is no substitute for experience! And, get those kids trained how to handle a gun safely and how to operate one. Those lessons will stick with them for life.

It was so funny to see a 9 year-old brother goofing with his 11 year-old sister on the range while waiting to fire. Once the gun went in their hands, they were all business and so confident. When dad was up there, they were both critiquing minor safety violations made by mom and dad. That kind of behavior with young kids was so common. Its like farm kids: They are eager to accept responsibility.

The next time someone tries telling you gun free zones save lives, tell them to put a sign on their front lawn that says "This is a Gun Free Home." I bet you'll get the deer in the headlights look. You may even get them to realize how stupid the whole concept is, but most are lost causes anyways.

Then ask them when was the last time you heard of a mass shooting at a NRA convention, gun show, gun shop, or a sportsman's club?

I know a teacher who wishes she could carry at school, and she works at a school in a really rough neighborhood.

They don't practice what they preach

One of my NRA co-instructors was a 3rd grade teacher.

This lady is a divorcee with four kids and a protection order on her ex. She is an awesome shooter and all her kids shoot. They know where mom's guns are and they know never to touch them -unless they are home alone and there is someone breaking into the house.

Several of her teacher friends at school have pulled her aside and asked about taking a class. In fact, before we suspended training, we were going to offer a class for free for them but no one was ready to commit. She thought they were still too afraid of guns thanks to the "guns kill" hype.

As an excellent gun operator, and a graduate of GunSite Academy, I couldn't think of a better teacher to arm up. She is still waiting for AZ to get off its duff. Unfortunately, that will probably only happen after a big event involving schools.

Our old team...

Ray, next time you're watching a football game, look for Andy Reid coach of the KC Chiefs. Your team member Mike could easily pass for him!

I was an NRA rife and shotgun instructor, Hunters safety instructor and a 4 H shooting sports leader for many years. Three of us worked together and we did classes in the spring and in the fall as well as once a month during the summer. We had somewhere around 50 to 60 people in each class. One thing that I noticed in later years was we would get whole families taking these classes. One mother told me that they may not have guns in the house they wanted to be somewhat familar with them if they ever came across one.One of the biggest gripes I had was they took the section about handun out of the hunter safety manuals. I brought this up at a meeting wit the DNR and I was told that most kids in hunter safety was to young to own a handgun. It is my belief that if someone is going to come across a gun in the house it will be a handgun

Daren...

Sorry! Meant to say "grand kids." But, I bet their parents took care of that.

Ike,

Good for you.

The NRA has permanently lost the trust and support of most of the instructors out here in AZ... for a number of reasons. We spent close to $500 getting trained and certified and now the NRA wants to change the whole class so they get $60 per student for online NRA training. This new class requires all new certification of the instructors costing another $350. That leaves the instructors to provide the range and training aids -and the NRA wants us to provide weapons at $4-500 per student! All this in a state that "shall issue" a permit. I like that concept but, the majority of shooters are paying $39 to watch two hours of videos and not even shoot from Groupon providers. And the NRA expects to compete against that? My insurance was $500 a year and that insurance is mandatory to get to shoot on Ben Avery range. Every NRA instructor I know has quit teaching. We simply cannot afford to do it. Sad because our class got top ratings and many referrals.

I loved doing family safety classes. One family had three boys and a daughter. Dad brought all the guns out and all the boys shot. The last gun out was his Remington 870 and the 5 & 1/2 year old insisted on shooting it. I warned him of the recoil. He still wanted to. I put the gun on him and simulated some good kicks. He was still all in. I had to help hold the gun level but he nailed the target and then ran excitedly to grab another shell and get in line behind his brother. I think he got 5 rounds off that day and he thought he was King Kong.

So did I.

:)
