Hi,

I would like to know the proper procedure to install a brand new injection pump. Unfortunately, did not leave engine in TDC before removing. How do I get injection pump installed now so I can do a spill test and check timing. Is there something that I need to do pump or I just put engine on TDC and then installed injection pump and do a spill test. I imagine probable being a brand new injection pump will have to remove some shims?

Thanks so much for your help.

Do you have all the original shims?
In other words do you have all the shims off the old pump?
If you do install them and your done, simple as that.
The motor can be in any rotational position.
The pumps are all the same dimensions new or rebuilt, it's the block that changes that's what the sims make up for.

Bummer, Well then install it in any rotation, then you will need to find the timing marks on the flywheel and do the spill test based on those marks.
Do you have the WSM to know the details of the test?

This thread is a ”Lesson” to be remembered!

Just because I have wrenches that fit the bolts on the machine…. and just because I know how to use them…. doesn’t mean I should turn any wrenches until I’ve read the ”Procedure” …on how to accomplish what might otherwise seem like a simple “unbolt and replace”…. when, in fact, …these “simple” diesels can fool ya’!

More Great Stuff from Wolfman!

Thank you.

You are so right. I don't have the manual but I have read a few blogs this is what i have:

push speed link to have full delivery.
turn engine fuel pump
turn engine clockwise
wait till see fuel starting to spill injector pump port 1 (front of engine)
check window and see how many degrees before tdc I am
read a forum I have to be withing 21.5 degree and 23 degree

What have I missed

Thanks again for your help

"What Have I missed?" Nothing. Follow those directions and tell us how it all works out.
Guys I might be doing something wrong.
Adding shims should retard timing correct? Meaning farther from tdc. Example I am at 15 degree if I add shim should be getting closer to 20 or 21 correct? Before tdc.
Seems to go the opposite way? Added and I seem to be at 10.

I reassemble the pump with shims.
Turn on fuel pump. I am running from a container and the return line back into container. I can see a lot of air.
After a while not more air.
Turn engine clockwise looking font engine and waiting to see when spill por 1 closer to front of engine.

What am I missing. It doesn't matter if engine is on tdc to install pump correct?

Guys,

Had a real brain damage. Opposite from what I wrote:

If with all the shims removed you still don't get to engine specs. What is the meaning of this?

the camshaft that the pump rides is wear out. Does not look so bad.

Thanks,
