I have finally tracked down a used differential gear set for my 1977 L225DT after years of searching. Is there anything special i should know about related to the installation such as crush collars and gear spacing and back lash? Also, will i need a bearing press?

I don't have a WSM for the DT. All my dad had was one for the L225 (2wd) version. i might just stop by the dealer and have a look at their's. That should work.

daniel welcome and please get the WSM. If I had one I'd shoot you the DT section on the front diff. You sound like this isn't your first rodeo and for sure you will be pressing the pinion bearing into the case or on to the shaft of the pinion gear, so you will need a press, portal power or some device to seat the bearing for an interference fit. There will be a preload torque on the pinion nut and shims for depth centerline of ring and a backlash setting on the ring to pinion relationship as on any hypoid gear set. So the short of it you will need about every tool you mentioned in your post above. Hope this gets you thinking and I'd like to see a post of the results with photos for the ole archives. Your post could become an article. ;)

OB1Kubota,
The salvage yard told me they are sending the unit fully assembled minus the pinion gear of course. With that said, will the differential carrier simply slide onto the axle shaft of one of the two shafts coming into the differential and then, i'll bolt the axle housing back together? It's been awhile since i have pulled the axle housing apart so i have forgotten what it looks like inside.

Thanks

Dan
