Injector pump question

I have an L185 bought it not running. I've put in new rings and not it hits on both cylinders but will not run after disengaging the starter. It seems like it is producing more smoke than normal but since I haven't seen it run I'm not sure. It looks like someone may have taken injector pump out before I bought it. Would it be possible that it had a thicker gasket and not it is pumping too much fuel? Any advice would be appreciated.

I am not a L185 expert however, injection pump repairs and adjustments are best left to specialty diesel shops.

Reading the WSM available at this link will show you how to remove the pump and get it back in time when replacing it. Page 20 of 63 shows how to set injection pump timing.

Because you don't know the history, I would have the injectors serviced, buy a gauge and do a compression test and adjust valve clearances just to take care of the most obvious issues.

Do you know how to check the glow plugs? Starting issues can begin with GP problems.

I have found the $10 instant download WSM from this site good value for the $

Re: Injection pump question

The "gasket" under the injection pump is shims and the size of the shims change the injection timing.
If it looks like someone has messed with the pump and added any kind of gasket sealer, you will need to remove pump and completely clean all the parts to metal and then reinstall.
I seal my pumps with a very very fine mist of paint.

Most over fuel issues are from bad injectors.

First and easiest test it to do is a fountain test on the injection pump.
Remove both injection lines off the pump, set the throttle to high, crank the tractor, if the pump puts out a 6" or so fountain then the pump is at least outputting fuel, then remove the injectors and install one injection pipe to the side and attach one injector loosely, need to bleed air from line, then tighten injector, with a piece of cardboard under the injector check for good fog/spray pattern.

I'll send you a link to download the WSM for it.

And for others down the track, you can give this one a go, may help someone out, covers 185, 235, 245, 275, 285, 295, 305, 345, 355, and if you need something not covered by it, you can always ask NIW if he has something else squirreled away.
EDIT: Same manual as listed by Dave_eng in post 2, I must have had my eyed closed!

Please explain your starting process so we can comment about it if required.

Do you know where the decompression knob is? Do you use it?
Do you know how to preheat the glow plugs? Do you use them? How long do you use them? Do you know if they work?

Do you know how to shut it down if it stays running?

Do you know how to stop it if it runs to faster RPMs than you like (runaway engine)?
