Reviving an old thread..... I have similar questions. I live in a lake association with miles of dirt roads with many potholes, and my business has a large gravel/TRG parking lot with potholes. What is going to be the best implement to maintain these ? I have looked at DR Power's 60" Power Grader with dozens of small scarifying teeth, Box blades, and land planes with and without teeth. I will probably be using my BX to start, but may upgrade to a B-2650.

I have a rear blade, and a rear rake that either barely scratch the surface, or totally dig it up. I always wait til after a good soaking rain to loosen things up before attempting to work on it.

Miles of dirt roads??? You need a much much bigger tractor. Unless you just have endless hours to perform this maintenance. I suggest that you get a machine that will pull at a minimum of a 7' Land Plane Grading scraper.

With the right equipment this should be able to be done in a day and if you do it once a month the roads stay about perfect.

Just my 2 cents. ;)

Good luck with your current equipment, I wouldn't even try.

Yeah... it's more of a hobby thing for me. The Association hires in the big equipment after it gets really bad (3-4 years) I just poke away at it over a few weekends..... and we have members with tractors on different roads that are willing to put some time in..... I was thinking 5', maybe 6'. Some of the roads are narrow, and I'd like to be able to put a crown back on too.

Below is what I use and have a mile of mixed gravel and sand/clay for my roads.

I maintain once a month and it takes me about 5 to 6 hours. I find it best to maintain rather than let it get bad.

My scraper is 6 foot, I did pull it with an L3400 and it was all it wanted as I try and keep material in the scraper to allow for filling in holes along the way and low spots. I now use a L4600 and it carries it well.

It does take time to get it set so I dedicate a top link to the implement. When I take off the plane I leave the link with it.
