This is on the RC48-G I am restoring. The idler bearings are shot and will not even move. The inner race of the two idler pulley bearings (080) are stuck to the shaft of the idler arm (020). I soaked it good with penetrant and left it in the press last night. I plan to add heat to the shaft today and then cool it off to see if it will break loose. Any other ideas?

I take it you don't have a press?
Yes, I have it in a 12T press.

I did get it apart. What a struggle. I tried to get the bottom Cir-Clip out (with no success) so the outer race could come out if the inner race didn't, ie, if it held on to the shaft. My neighbor and I heated the shaft and inner races with Oxy-Acetylene and then shocked it with cold water. When we pressed it, it suddenly broke loose the outer race in the pulley and broke the lower Cir-Clip out of the casting. So, now we had the pulley off, but still had the two bearing inner races stuck on the shaft. We heated the inner races and press again. The lower outer race broke, but the upper bearing came off of the shaft. Now we had the lower bearings, cage and inner race still stuck on the shaft. We heated it red hot again and used a bearing separator on the inner race and it reluctantly finally came off. What a battle!! Here are the parts and yes, I dropped the pulley and broke a part of the lower lip off:

Yep went thru the same mess about 10 years ago, I put bearings in it put it back together and ran up to this year and the bearings went out again, changed them out and put it back together again, I've had no trouble with it being broke.

glad you got it but in future don't cool piece as heating expands
race so it will press off.cooling shrinks it back and changes hardness
when drenched. keith

What do you do when you can only heat both the race and the shaft?
