I have this old hand saw question

Does anyone know why there's a bump on top of this saw. It sure looks to me that it serves a purpose. Im sure somebody here knows. BTW...I dont!

Several theory's on what it's for.

One being it's a scribe, other being that it's there to keep the saw from getting stuck on a plunge cut.

What is the notch for on a hand saw?

maybe that side is supposed to be a knife blade that tab looks the same as what is on the bottom of a pocket knife
