My brother sent off a sample and got his DNA analysis back, which pretty much agreed with what we were told growing up as far as our ethnic background. But the proportions were quite different which surprised me. Our name is a German name and we were told we were half German plus Scotch and Irish.

The results came back as 87% Scotch and Irish and a small percent French/German. The French/German part makes sense because we were also told that somebody came from Alsace-Lorraine (sp?), which has swung back and forth between Germany and France over the years.

But then the lightbulb came on! I realized these companies that do DNA analysis are simply fronts for the government who are gathering data on the citizens for whatever reason!

We already know that these companies share the DNA data with the government and use it to track people down.

Case closed! Just think of me as your big brother sharing with his younger siblings…

Marketplace did a test of the tests.... used TWINS ! Kinda odd that sibling 'A' came from a TOTALLY diferent part of the world than did sibling 'B' !!!!
Naturally the DNA companies ( 2 or 3 of them) had reasons..NONE of which made ANY sense.

If you take the time to READ the 'consent' forms , you actually allow the companies to sell or give away your DNA to anyone,either freely or for a fee.....

Worse are ALL the Covid-19 tests.. 100% of those are in the hands of the governments and several private companies...

Same for that 'ap' you NEED to get back into Canada

All in good fun…but DNA analysis from these companies HAS made it possible for authorities to locate some bad guys, so I guess that is a good thing…

And yes vee9aa…if your retirement is good you will have time to do whatever you feel like! REALLY! But actually there was a serious side to the original post if you think about it.

I think they used it to catch the Green River Killer.

Those tests are known to be wildly inaccurate. Twins have gotten very different results.

Personally, I think the capture of the Golden State Killer was a watershed moment for law enforcement.

My understanding is that a DNA match was made by uploading a DNA sample from the killer to a 'database' from which relatives of the killer were identified. After that, experts in the technology used their experience and training to eliminate the most obvious (e.g., females) from the list, narrowing it down to a manageable number and working through that to ultimately identify (positively, by DNA match) the killer.

There are quite a few podcasts out there that explain how familial DNA is used.

Police will send the DNA profile to one of the DNA registries. 23&me is one of those.

The registry then compares and looks for a familial match. They then do a genealogy search to narrow the list down.

In one case I listened too, they narrowed it down to brothers.

Police then will go try to obtain a DNA sample on the sly to see which brother it was.

In one case they followed the Brothers around individually till they tossed a cup in the trash. They then processed the cup and compared the sample to the known sample of the killer.

Once they had it narrowed down to the individual. They then apply for a warrant to obtain a sample that can be used 8n court

In the case of submitting your sample to one of these DNA registries, you can chose whether your DNA can be shared with law enforcement or not.

Some of these registries actively work with law enforcement while others don't.

There are even more sinister theories out there. Many of these services use a company in China, BGI, to do the sequencing. They are cheap and linked to the government. It is riduclously cheap so popular. The data is used for bioweapon research.

There is a huge privacy concern with submitting DNA. Problem is that law enforcement is able to use the database. They don't have a 'direct link' to private company's data, however have a procedure to gain access. This helps catch criminals that would otherwise be cold cases. Sound good? Well there is another side to it...

People can get falsely accused for many reasons. Normally DNA at crime scenes is not a perfect sample and mess with all sorts of DNA everywhere with cross contamination. It's up to police officials to ensure everything gets handled correctly. That doesn't always happen.

Then if a family member gives their DNA, this helps trigger a close but not an exact match to a suspect. This lets police make guesses and do things like dumpster dive to get other's DNA who they suspect is a match. But the thing is, it is out of your control if a family member submits their DNA. It's kinda of similar to providing your SSN and date of birth on to someone and they turn around and start sharing it with everyone.

Last, government should not have access to this kind of data. It's a can of worms for leaks, improper use, and possible use the data for socialist leftist ideas/projects.

People will often say 'I don't care I don't have anything to hide.' This so naive

- What if you are falsely accused?
- What if you do have something to hide in the future or laws change perhaps not to your agreement?
- What if your DNA is being used for a purpose you have not consented to (just throwing it out there, perhaps in the future advertising companies can see your DNA and determine what products you want or food you like)?
- What if your DNA or parts of it is used for things like making a clone or genetically engineering in the future (perhaps the data was stolen)?
- What if the company you gave your DNA to becomes corrupt or has people have malintent to use your DNA (just throwing out there what if a crimelord gains access and needs some samples to cover their tracks...the box you send off to the ancestry is picked up by a gang member as transported in the mail)
- So many reasons....

My 2 cents is it is REALLY REALLY REAALLY stopid to give up your DNA for silly stuff like trying to see what % you are german or african or monkey. Perhaps if you have a health problem and need genetic testing to figure out what's wrong it is required. Healthcare has HIPAA to protect your DNA... private companies DON'T...
