Dan, I have you beat on the time that a top link can stay idle and never mounted. I bought mine about 15 years ago for my BX22 and never installed it. I ran across it a few weeks ago and put it where it wouldn't get lost, but now I can't find it. I am beginning to believe that I have lost my memory and I know that I have lost my top link again. Eventually, like most things, it will show up in the last place I look.
